I know this is for the shifter when it folds down.....my truck doesnt have the work surface so it's never folded down

I use it for my knife and it will fit a large Chick-Fil-A fry but what is its main purpose??

You have already described the main purpose, for the work surface. Apparently enough people want a console shifter rather than a column shifter, and it must not save enough money to make 2 different styles, so they leave the foldable one even if you don't need it.

My guess anyway. I sometimes put my wallet there.

Kinda dumb that this electric motorized folding shifter is always included, but it's like $1000 to get a hinge and extra plastic bits for the "work surface". There is no logical reason for this, only marketing reasons to upsell a package. They should include the folding lever only with the work surface package, OR always include the folding console... which is, of course, what they should have done. Console lid is very thick and a complete waste of space without the fold option.

I disagree. The work surface adds weight and is inferior as an armrest. Too hard.

If I still worded out of my truck as a mobile office, I'd have ordered it with but since I don't, ordered it without.

As for the hole, I don't use it, for fear of accidentally hitting the fold button and breaking whatever I had in there, or the shifter, or both.

If I had a choice, mine wouldn't have the fold feature.

I have the work surface and love it. As an arm rest it does not have much cushion but no less than the door arm rest. I like it. The hole for the folding shifter holds my keys.
