ok, what's with all the physicists around here? My undergrad was in physics, but after my naval misadventure, I never used it again. But the math background and a math. Minor sure came in handy getting a PhD in economics and statistics (not a combo, but two PhD majors)
I don't know - maybe all the blinking lights on these trucks?

After I dabbled in astronomy and realized IT was easier and paid better I went that way. Then about 15 years ago I started studying theology and 10 years ago I was ordained a deacon in the Catholic Church. I still have to work a secular job because the Catholic Church doesn't pay married deacons or provide for their support unless the deacon also has another job in the Church that would pay a salary for a layperson.

Ok. Not exactly the same, but I still need to watch Flight of the Intruder again just because.

I’m right there with you. I work in a corporate HR role for a fortune 200 company. I have no say in anything. I come to work, take some zoom calls, tell some younger people what to do, then go home as quickly as I can to watch my teams on ESPN+. Have been doing the same for decades.

Can’t wait to retire, but it’s over a decade away ☹. Guess I’ll just keep plugging away.
We have a large defense contractor here who can never find enough people. I have friends that work there that have tried to get me to apply for open IT positions. They'd probably pay 15-20% more, but I really don't want to be a cog in a machine. I feel like I make a difference where I am and can actually make decisions without dealing with a ton of red tape.

Plus, I'm vested in the pension system now, so it'd be crazy to walk away and not stay put to keep that benefit growing.

Rerired, 30 years Army.

Fun fact: Years ago I spent a number of years inspecting Russian nuclear missiles. Yes, literally true.

KSA (knowledge, skills, abilities) summary: Enjoyed a career where I excelled at creating problems for my bosses. Got lots of awards for my skill and diligence doing so.

Career highlight: Most proud of the diseases and injuries incurred along the way. Never really in harm's way, but shot at once or twice (in peacetime and by accident or so I was told!).

Eat, drink, sleep, watch TV, etc.( 10th year of retirement ) It's kind of like being a good-for-nothing bum but justified for working in the offshore oil production world at 80+ hours per week including all holidays.
