You would need to check both sides.
I do it when I self rotate tires/oil change.

Forum for the win, indeed. Got the heads-up here. Decided to wait for recall letter. Came yesterday so texted service dept. No problem to schedule but be aware that at least my dealer still needed me to text pictures of odometer and door sticker showing VIN to get the ball rolling.
Did your dealer or anybody else's give you the line of they need to be broken to have the new ones installed or just the clowns i went to?

Just the clowns you went to, apparently. My dealer was up on the latest recall info. Ordered parts right away. And this is after I went in a month ago for a general tune-up and I asked them to look at the axles and they said they were fine.

What's the trick for pulling the center caps off? I tried a bit with some plastic interior trim tools that I have, but eventually gave up as even they were too thick to fit into the gap and I didn't want to scratch my wheels. I'm not even sure I have the max tow axle, but figured I would check.

And do you have to check both sides, or just one?
I've used feeler gauges. Now I use a small pocket knife. Never scratched anything. Doesn't take much effort.

Thought so. I actually bought the truck there last year. '21 loaded lariat with 32k. Not one salesman or service manager knew what I was talking about when I express my concerns buying a max tow. I had to show a picture of a broken bolt.

Ford is really missing a marketing opportunity to turn this mistake around with ‘Come get your recall fixed using the only Ford approved “truck nuts”.’

I just called my dealer and the truck is going in next Tuesday the 20th. Sounds like your dealer is yanking your chain on doing it.
After scheduling the axle replacement, I received a voice mail from a clueless wonder at the dealership telling me that since my bolts were inspected that there would be no axle replacement. Of course the latest recall notice says they WILL BE REPLACED.

So upon calling back I got the Service Manager by luck. He proceeded to tell me the same thing the clueless one said and that he and the clueless on had discussed my truck and the message she was to deliver to me.

I read him the letter I received from FORD. "Well let me look to see if there is anything further added to the recall, Ford routinely doesn't tell us of updates. " Of course he found the update. I would say they don't "Routinely keep-up on the updates Ford makes."

So now the appointment is in question because he doesn't know if they can get the axles by Tuesday.

It's the same old B.S. Runaround I've gotten on everything else. I am still fighting with Ford over an 18 month-old crappy Ford battery that won't hold a charge.

Over $60 grand for a truck and they can't put a decent battery in it!! That's pretty pathetic!

For the record it's Kunes Ford in East Moline, IL.

If possible I would start over at another dealer.

My dealership told me the only way to get the new designed axles now is only if have a broken bolt, because of the limited supply. So, here again, every Ford dealership seems to be doing their own thing. So congrats to those who got the new axles/hubs. I now have axle envy :)

From my service advisor:
New! REASON FOR THIS SUPPLEMENT Parts Availability for final repair Update: • Parts for the final repair for this program are now available in very limited quantities. • Owner letters will be mailed the week of May 12, 2025, to provide updated part availability.
At this time, the repair is only being completed on vehicles that have the bolts sheared off.
Mine just told me they'll have it for at least a week to confirm it's bad and then replace if necessary.

The inconsistencies between dealerships and what they will tell a customer is hilarious.

So he didn't even bring them the truck until they received the assemblies, and then upon handing them the keys, it took "just over an hour".

Contrast that with being without your vehicle for a week.

I'll never forget calling a local service department I don't use for an obvious reason...

Me: "How much do you charge per hour for labor?"
Them: '$150 an hour'
Me: "How long to install the Ford Performance Suspension Kit?"
Them: 'Please hold'
*hold for 3-5 minutes*
Them: 'It will be 4-6 hours and we actually charge $258 an hour for labor'

The dealer I've had do all my service thus far has been pretty good, outside of not being able to get a loaner, they've been great and I'm still on the schedule for Friday, I bet they will rotate my tires without charge too when they do the recall work.

That’s just insane. They have your VIN so they 100% know it’s a Max Tow and federally mandated that it has to have the updated axles no matter what. Over the phone a day to bring it in should be arranged and the new axles should be awaiting your arrival. I believe it only pays the Ford tech an hour or so peacetime so it shouldn’t be there more than a few hours total. Should not be any prerequisite for pictures or broken bolts or pre inspections. What a joke.

I have been away from the forum for a while.

Absolutely thrilled to see they FINALLY have a permanent (hopefully) fix for this.

It is absurd that it took this long for an issue Ford likely was well aware of after the first axle failed.

They likely knew about the issue as the truck was being designed. But this updated axle solution costs more and some cost analyst found that by using an inferior design they could show project savings and get their Value Engineering goal and bonus. Some of these companies procurement folks have incentives equal to their salary. So they will recommend a cheaper solution in order to hit short term bonuses. Reliability be damned.
