Sometimes, it’s not always about top performance. The charm of going back in time with a much simpler machine can be its own reward. Turn heads and start conversations everywhere like no new truck could ever hope to do. Stand out in a crowd of cookie cutter $70,000 luxury limo trucks. A machine that can easily be repaired at home and still get the job done.

While it certainly could be, it doesn't have to be ones only vehicle.

I get that, sorta.

I've restored several and use older tractors. And unless genuine collectables, modify them, to suit my desires.

They wind up better than what is available as new.

I do not put trucks or cars in the same category though. There has been genuine improvement in them. A lot of it.

Quick story, with a few points.

I learned to drive, in a 53 GMC 5 window. Cool looking truck, even today but would it compete in any way with anything, other than ease of working on it?

My Uncle restored a 62 Vet. It was his baby and nobody drove it but him. Super cool car but once he did let me drive it, I'd already experienced what independent suspension was like. Oh, it had that American V8 power and sound but it handled like driving a bucket. It actually shocked me.

Same for my 69 Firebird. Loved that car but again, comparatively, a bucket. Had an 80s vintage Cougar. They'd changed the suspensions by then but it was a land yacht, as for handling.

The suspensions on modern vehicles are vastly superior and I sure as hell don't want to go back to drum brakes, and no anti lock.

Then there is the fuel economy. It took too long a time IMO but from 16 all around, on my previous 2 trucks, to the mid 20s on this one, while also producing near double the power and towing capacity? No, I ain't going back.

The only reason I don't buy a "shit box" is I don't have time to restore it.

You can keep telling yourself newer is always better too.

Some people want a truck, not a SUV that they can still feel manly driving.
Put your money where your mouth is. You could've easily bought a good condition old truck and paid someone to fix it up for the price of a new f150. There is not a single thing that is better on an old truck than a new one and your purchase is the pudding

Now that I have some time- I can assure you technology was at the bottom of my list as to why I bought my truck. One, as I said, was time. Both in that I have no time to do the work myself, and ordering a truck and getting it delivered was quicker than finding one, finding someone to do the work, and getting it back.

With the market for older trucks, the cost would probably be about the same, but one minor drawback to a "classic" is no financing. No way I'm getting .9% from a bank to finance restoring a 92 Ford.

Insurance is also a consideration. Coverage on a new truck is going to be considerably better. Very few people are going to cover the cost of restoring an old truck to be used as a daily driver.

Selling my wife on dumping 40k into a 30 year old truck was also going to be nearly impossible.

And then, lastly, if I sunk that much into an old truck, I wouldn't want to just destroy it slowly by driving it every day.

Like I said, new technology was not a reason I went with a new truck. In fact, it was a major reason I both bought the trim I did and did a lot of looking at older trucks to potentially buy. In the end, it was going to cost $25k to buy a halfway decent older truck that has no guarantee on lifetime. A new truck, I at least have a warranty to cover the extra shit on it. And when it dies (the extra crap like cameras and other stuff) I just hope it still runs.

However, much like all media lately, I do think they may be agenda-driven or at the very least "influenced" by certain auto makers.
Hi! Influenced-media here. What makes you say that?

Thank goodness the 5.0 models don’t come with that cylinder deactivation nonsense you hear causing trouble, or that idiotic 10 speed automatic. That transmission is just too fancy with all those modes and stuff. None of that Sync 4 goofiness for my trusty V8 Ford. You know that will fail soon as the warranty expires!

Yep, I dodged more than a few bullets with my wise choice of vehicle.
I'm confused. All new 2024 5.0L V8 Ford trucks come with the 10-speed and cylinder deactivation.

They do all play games, Ford sent MotorTrend a long wheelbase 157” fully loaded king ranch 4x4 5.0 in 2021 for testing. That was to artificially sandbag the V8 with the heaviest and longest configuration available in the fleet and showcase the other options at the time. I see people reference that all the time that the 2.7 “nearly matched” the 5.0 in the 1/4 mile but if you look at the fine print the 5.0 is 12” longer, 4x4, and 500 LBS heavier yet still bested the light short wheelbase XLT 2.7 Eco. If the curb weights are the same it’s a well….curb stomp.

The manufacturers play little tricks like that all the time. Depends on their intent. Lately Ford has been actually pushing the V8 and sending out XLT and Tremor testers, but 4 years later Ford is one of the only V8’s left in town, now they want to showcase it and sell more of them where 4 years ago they were only pushing the hybrid hard.

But the long bed isn't but ~18lbs heavier depending on options
Not sure how you'd call an extra 2% mass "sandbagging" ?‍♂

I working in a Ford dealership for over 26 yrs and i could see watch vehicles had a lot problems and which ones didn't. So with that there will always be some out just have bad luck there but usually the majority of use really like our vehicles . I have a 2024 F150 King Ranch Hybrid and after coming from only owning the 5.0, yes i miss the throaty sound i really like the Hybrid and the power is out standing. Just my thoughts.

At the time I built my special order 2022 157" truck, the documentation showed 21 lbs more.
Regardless of whether 19 or 21 pounds, a 157" truck isn't much heavier for the extra foot itself.
