Seems like ALL of these 10speeds, both Ford and GM have similar issues, all though I have never heard/read of and of the Ford's locking up the rear. In typical modern fashion, the recall is not offering a fix or valve body swap out, rather they are changing the SW to try and monitor the trans before it fails and reduce power and limit the truck to 5th gear then bring it in! Unreal. I feel much better about my Ford today.

I feel bad for the GM truck owners. Some enterprising lawyers will make a fortune when this goes class action, if it has not already done so.

Has anyone said what the exact failure is that causes a complete lock up?

ZF makes the best automatic for use in passenger vehicles in my opinion. Hard to be the ZF 8HPXX series.

I believe many OEM racing programs use a normal factory 8HPXX in their vehicles.

does this not make it a bit worrying for Ford owners since the transmission was jointly developed between the two manufacturers?

Possibly, but I personally have not read of reports on this forum. The tranny may have been co-developed, but I suspect each manufacturer has tweaks to the design, and of course different parts suppliers as well. It is also odd that (as reported by YouTubers) the GM recall is only for 3 liter diesels.

I came across some more information that I did not catch. The GM diesels use a different transmission than the gassers. Another thread stated the GM transmission in question is a 10L1000 which may be more akin to Fords 10R140.

those value engineer decisions to remove parts or downgrade quality of components is really paying off for both GM and Ford.

I don't think that GM uses the Allison's in the 1500's though. I'm still trying to figure out which transmission the 1500 diesels use, but it appears they are different than the co-developed 10 speed.

Retired and not looking. I am driving the wife crazy.

One of the best late model transmissions, not withstanding my Turbo 400 a few decades back, was the wife's 6 speed in her 2011 Yukon Denal XL. I never cared for this feature but it was clever. The shift from 1 to 2 had a very slight delay, as if I had taken my foot off of the accerator, then back on. Almost imperceptable. The wife never noticed it.

I later found out that the throttle was slightly reduced just for the 1-2 shift. I went from pissed to impressed that GM thought far enough ahead to add that feature, which of course helps prevent the Risky Business slide from 1-2. Sold it with 203,000 miles with almost zero problems of any kind, including my V4/V8 identity problem.

I had a 10-speed in my Chevy Traverse that operated perfectly. This was unlike the 10-speed transmission in the Honda Pilot that was terrible and was so slow to upshift as to be dangerous when trying to merge with freeway traffic.

Check places like carcomplaints.com for reports on problems with transmissions by make and model year.
https://www.carcomplaints.com/Ford/F-150/2019/transmission/transmission_doesnt_shift_correctly.shtml

Ford sells nearly 2 million trucks each year and so even a 1% defect rate would result in 20,000 truck owners experiencing problems.

Ford has a 10r100 version of the trans. There's nothing wrong with the trans design itself, but they do have typical shortcut nonsense that ends up biting them in the ass. Ford uses a sloppy solenoid design that results in its own issues requiring the valve body replacement.

Have to agree with you on this. The 25' RAM HD trucks will now have an 8 speed ZF trans, they have been using a ZF in their half tons for awhile and it's a great transmission.

GM uses Allison transmissions that can handle the added torque of the diesel engine. They are also 6-speed transmissions.
