I have a 10 speed 2.7 and I was curious if people notice their truck to “lug” when it’s cold outside a bit. When it’s above freezing, I haven’t really noticed it but below freezing I feel as though it doesn’t like being in 8th gear so early.

my truck shifts into 8th around 40 mph. In cold weather, it seems like it doesn’t like being in 8th until about 44-45 mph or it’ll have the lugging feeling. I can manually shift it into 7th (or put into sport which is usually 5th gear) and it’s back to smooth.

anyone else have this too? When do some of your trucks shift into 8th normally?

Try some higher grade fuel. Not what you're wanting to hear but give it a try.

I use tow/haul most of the time since it is always wanting to lug and drone in too high a gear. It generally keeps the rpm in the 2000 range which totally solves the problem. Switch to normal for hwy driving. You can try a higher octane fuel but I doubt that's the problem.

Thanks- I should’ve mentioned I’m already running 93. Hmm tow/haul interesting idea. I assume it doesn’t stay in that mode

No, but asks you the next time you start if you want that mode. Other than that, it's only 2 clicks on the selector knob. The other benefit is that it turns off auto start/stop which I hate with a passion.

I shut the auto start/stop off too, so the 2 seconds I save there I can turn the dial to haul/tow lol

I had transmission issues in my 2022 2.7EB with 17k miles now (the well-known erratic, harsh shifting issue), identified by the dealer as TSB 24-2101. They overhauled the valve body, replaced the CDF drum and a bunch of other stuff. That was about 4k miles and a few months ago. Because of what I experienced before, I pretty much don't let the truck lug at all now. I can detect very very slight transmission shuddering when lugging, like in 8th gear at 70mph. But nothing like before the transmission repair. So I lock out gears 8, 9 and 10 mostly all the time except at over 70-75 MPH+ on very flat or down hill freeway. Like @NationalSuperbike said, I try to keep it in the 2000 RPM range or higher. Just my opinion based on what I experienced, I don't think the 10R80 likes to lug.

However, I think late 2022 and beyond has the upgraded CDF drum.

So crazy that we need to alter all these things in an automatic truck. I feel like I’m flying a spaceship pressing all these buttons and dials just to drive normal
