It's unbelievable that you can now by a laptop for less than half the price of the Mongoose cable! ? ?
Yep I think it was right at $300 at the time. :)

I was thinking 8 GB ram, 125/256 GB SSD and Windows 10 or 11. Has to have 2 or 3 USB ports and WiFi. Figured that would work just nicely.

What brand did you get?
HP but it really wasn't a consideration on cheap Windows 11 laptop.

I wouldn't skimp on HDD space either if you plan to use FDRS, the program itself plus some of the update files you need can get rather bloated, especially if you're doing multiple vehicles.

NVME SSDs are so cheap today, as is ram. I've got several machines with 64GB and my primary has 128GB. A cheap laptop with a 50$ SSD and $30 worth of ram will really wake it up.

Hell for $100 I put a 2TB NVME SSD in a little external case and use that to distribute things to friends and family. On 10Gb USB it pulls a solid 1.2GB/s transfer rate. That's a lot of movies/media that can be moved around quickly.

Unfortunately I tried to use it to transfer sync updates but sync 4 in its current form can't use it :(

I'm fortunate to have access to a corporate cache of windows based weapons. All sorts of formats. The weapon of choice in the daily travel bag is the current model Surface Laptop packing plenty of heat. ?

I think I've installed FDRS and Forscan on 4 or 5 different machines in the last couple of years. The only issue with this one is the single USB A port is taken by the Mongoose. So I either have to use a USB C stick, or plug in a USB port replicator for traditional sticks.

The reason for such bounty is that I'm often in the field and sometimes run into situations where the necessary solution is me giving MY device away to someone else. It's strategic. I don't fret.

I return to home base soon enough and grab the next device I desire to give a run. I've pretty much settled on the smaller business size Surface Laptop until something I might prefer comes along.

Using the external drive as a USB drive for the updates. It'd take ~5 seconds to transfer the 6GB APIM update to the drive for instance. The vehicles don't recognize it as storage though displaying something like "charging only supported for connected device"

The best approach is to toss the laptop into the vehicle and then RDP into it so I can sit at the desk to not be tied to the vehicle for some updates.

But why would you think that simply pluging a drive to your dash would update your APIM? As speed goes you can use a USBc thumb drive it's plenty fast. Where would the "SYNC" files on the disk have come from? Module updates need to be downloaded for the specific vehicle vin and installed with FDRS. Without an installation program such as FDRS or Forscan as an intermediary the files useless. ?

You just have to be careful, many budget laptops have soldered NVME and RAM which can’t be upgraded by most hobbiest.

True that. My classification of 'budget' is a little bit above the true low price options. Things like chrome books / celeron level of processors are "do not buy" category for me. Just about every laptop I've ever bought was opened before powered on. My primary laptop is a rugged gaming unit as they come with better cooling and a GPU that can actually be used for things like 3D applications / rendering. The cheapies I use are $400 units.

Looking for ideas on this issue or see if anyone else is experiencing this. I did an APIM update via FDRS on Oct 6 up to version 23167 Rev 926. Ever since then my Android Auto will connect and load. In about 5 seconds it will drop out and display the image below. 60% of the time it will re-connect in 10 seconds. The rest if the time it won't work unless I manually connect it from the phone screen. I have done an APIM reset, removed the phone from by vehicle, cleared out the app data and cache from Android Auto on my phone. Same result.

Phone is a Pixel 5, Android 13.

I believe this is a phone issue and not an issue with F150. Try deleting phone data and cache two more times after you delete the phone. When you re-connect the phone pay special attntion to giving all the permissions needed by the phone sometimes they come up quickly and dont give enough time to accept the phone permission. If still not working try android auto with wired connection and it usually works, Last resort try another phone !

I have done all that. I even upgraded to Android 14 last night. It's odd it started exactly after I upgraded my APIM.
