Not sure BCM updates come in via OTA updates...the gurus would have to confirm that.

the BCM wasn’t pushed over the air. Those that installed it used FDRS. Many of the updates are making the trucks run better such as the latest PCM update.

I have noticed the truck runs smoother with this latest PCM update, made the cost for FDRS a bit easier to absorb.

so this is something we can choose to do and isn’t necessary like the over the air updates?

It something many of us have chosen to do rather than wait on FORD to figure out OTA, or to deal with the dealership's refusal or inability to help.

We simply keep our trucks up to date ourselves.

yes, you can choose to do it but it requires the purchase of some hardware items that are not cheap and a software license from Ford to use FDRS. Ford doesn’t push all the updates out over the air (OTA) or they don’t want to wait for Ford to push them. The dealerships also seem to not have a clue.

Ford is continually releasing updates. They show up in the FDRS tool ahead of time, but some of those are for testing / specific vehicles and tend to break other vehicles. The benefit is that you can get updates early. The risky part is you can brick the truck or have it not work right.

The adapter is $500, and licenses start at ~50 for 2 days, 150 for a month, or $800 for a year.


If you have some buddies locally to spread the cost around it's not bad. I've got a mach e and the F150, and am working on other projects that require FDRS to run certain service functions. Like w/ the mache, after removing the battery there's a 1 hour long process that has to run in order to purge the coolant lines after it goes back in. That's run in the software.

I think it might be worth exploring an additional theory : taking a look at the trucks that had their lighting impacted by the latest BCM updates and taking a look at their as-built data, to see if perhaps the truck is telling the software it has a different type of lighting than it actually does. I would have no idea where to look, but maybe @Jesse-Infotainment or @antho have some insights.
