Incorrect. The separate plan for your vehicle to be a hotspot is optional and not required. If you choose to subscribe, you will need the modem active, of course.

wireless carplay is bluetooth. nothing to do with the modem in your truck.

Isn't that wireless app projection slider for a wired phone? If you tap the circle with the "i" next to it, it will tell you.

You don't have to pay to activate the modem. You're "activating" it by adding it (the truck) to FordPass, which gives you access to the various unpaid and (optional) paid features/subscriptions. That's what I was trying to say several posts ago.

Wireless CarPlay negotiates the connection using Bluetooth and then switches to WiFi direct for everything else after that.

With the "connected built in" it reverts to offline navigation after three years.

With the "connected" you lose everything except just a current location indicator after 90 days and have to pay a yearly subscription to get everything back including turn by turn.

Both say "Provides navigation in "cellular dead zones"" which indicates the less expensive option has equipment with the map stored in the vehicle and GPS. So I can't imagine what they are doing other than charging more up front for one and basically remotely disabling the other.

So there is no reason to even download the fordpass app , as I will not be paying for any services and do not use any of the remote services, I have a 2018 f150 and never had the fordpass.

Never had the modem active in my '22 Lariat. I have received Sync updates through my home wifi and Starlink when out camping. My 3 year connected navigation expires in April and I will sign up for the annual plan since I like the navigation features especially for when towing the camper. I can always use the iPhone as a portable hotspot too.

No you have not. There has only been one OTA update that was delivered via WiFi, and that was to fix an issue with the TCU/gateway to fix OTA delivery issues.

Funny, I was trying to connect to my trucks WiFi last weekend on a drive up to Tahoe, and it seems I couldn’t connect to the WIFI and stay connected to CarPlay at the same time. Everytime I tried it would connect to the WiFi but then drop the CarPlay connection. Sucks!
