I traveled from DFW to Austin and back over the weekend. It was windy and I've got 21 mpg on my way to Austin downwind and 17.5 mpg on my way home upwind.

Well, new f150 owner and I am very surprised. Took a trip to the airport and reset the mileage, truck has about 2,000 miles on it. 330 mile round trip averaged 23.6 on the computer and didn't use half a tank.

Anyone else in the V8 camp who is part of the 20 MPG lifetime average club? Crossed the line on Thursday on the way back from a work trip coming back from Columbus Ohio to Buffalo. I averaged about 80 MPH so I don’t baby this rig. Who woulda thunk we’d see the day a 400 horsepower V8 averages 20 mpg lol.

I am.

Just made a round trip from NE ohio to middle of WV. Avg 20.6 for the trip. That includes idle time, mountains, etc. I also only drive in sport mode.

Yes, long highway trip. I set cruise at 73 mph in the 70 zone. That is the limit before mph goes south. Seems to be optimal for my truck.

That actually brought my lifetime avg down a bit.

I average around 20.6 lifetime and normally get a little over 23 running 87 octane. I always use the top tier gas . I just rolled 14000 this weekend. I tow a pontoon and a car trailer on occasion.

I haven't used any E85. From what I read it doesn't get as good of mileage than regular.

5.0 w/ 3.73 gears averaging 16 mpg over the last ~2500 miles with ODO at ~25k. It’s mostly small-med FL city, but we get on short highway trips here and there. I get ~20 on highway @70-75 mph. I’m pretty light on the throttle too, not grandma, but regularly watching and conscious about mpg.

I will say it’s less than I expected to get. All my research said gearing would make a ~1-2 mpg difference. I’m not so sure that’s the case. Based on these reports, seems more like 3-4 mpg.

These are truck calculations too…I’m afraid to hand calculate. Will be about the same city average as my previously owned 1997 v6 4Runner with 200k miles. Granted this is larger, heavier and can tow twice as much, but dang it man. Makes me regret the 3.73 purchase a bit since I don’t regularly tow.

I think 3.73 could potentially start to rob a wee bit of economy on the newer trucks with the 10R80, especially on the highway. Driving habits account for a lot though.

The 1st and 2nd gear ratios on the 10R80 are 4.69:1 then 2.99:1, compare this to the 6R80 with a 1st ratio of 4.17:1 and 2nd of 2.34:1. The 10R80 has a lot lower first 2 gear ratios, meaning a 3.31 in the 10R80 is equal to a 3.73 6R80. (Both are 15.5 final drive ratio in 1st gear).

I went in thinking I needed 3.73 until I compared the gear ratios between the 6 speed and 10 speed and realized a 3.31 on the 10 speed is the same as the deepest ratio available on the old 6 speed. Honestly the 5.0/3.31 hauls my boat great and with excellent authority, it doesn’t ever lack for power and it’s not a flat tow. Tow/Haul dials it in and it shift nicely. I think I’d stay with the 3.31 next time as well because it is a fuel miser on the highway.

I've put lifetime 323.7 gallons of e10 and 261 gallons of e85 into my 5.0.

Since I've owned the truck getting 18.7 mpg (trip computer).

The % of fuel that is e85 = 261 / (323.7 + 261)
= 44.6%

E85 Energy /E10 Energy ~ 89.5 / 122

So my MPG adjustment factor

= 122 / (% e85 * 89.5 + % gas * 122) = 1.134

1.134 * 18.7 mpg =

21.2 mpg per computer since I've got the truck (assuming no e85)

Specs:
5.0 v8,
SuperCrew 4wd shortbed
3.31 gears,
1997 lbs payload, ,
Tonneau cover,
Factory ride height,
275 65r18 Factory Michelins,
38/34 front/rear psi
40/60 city/highway.
~70mph highway speeds
I drive very smooth.

Try it for yourself and actually see.

My dad refused to try it when gas was really high. I'm sure the lower cost of E85 would have offset the lower economy.

Other thoughts:

The computer is probably 1 mpg or so optimistic.

The truck runs amazing on E85

@JExpedition07 loves the 5.0 lol

I can get 24-25 mpg at 70 mph all day if no wind and flat.

I also had a great 21 Lariat powerboost 4x4 with 3.73 gears, 18" factory Goodyears & ride height, tonneau cover, 1600 lbs payload, same 38/34 inflation specs.

Powerboost saw less mpg on the same routes at freeway speed (~1-2 mpg less). On trips longer than 3 minutes at lower speeds, it was obviously better. Around 23 mpg computer for the 11k miles I had it.

21.0 MPG Average over 34K
24.3 MPG on a 54 mile trip, 80% highway. Notice "495 Miles to Empty" on a full tank. I'm not sure if that's based on "overall" milage or just "recent" milage.

I've pulled off up to 28+ MPG babying it on a freeway trip in "Eco Mode" and seen as little as 14 MPG towing my trailer up & down a mountain highway.

I'm impressed with how Ford Engineers have given us the ability to really squeeze every last drop if we want to but still have access to all that power when we need to.

So you have the 5.0 and 3.31 gears. What cab, bed, and drive you have? Cuz those are some pretty high numbers for your typical Screw 4x4.

I have a supercrew 4wd shortbed with a tonneau. The truck is very light relative to others and has 32" vs 33" tires.

I just did a 200 mile trip, elevation went from 1100 to about 600 feet. Wind 8 m/hr mostly cross, but helping just a touch.

Averaged 25.0 mpg per the dash on arrival. I had cruise at 71-72 mph for most of the trip.

91 octane.
