Update! The dealership found out that it is locking up in 3rd gear, deflating to 8th. Replacing the whole transmission. 500 miles on the truck so far. They did say this is very rare. I guess I need to stay away from lottery tickets!

That sucks! Glad they are taking care of it and you are taking it in stride. Hopefully the next transmission will be the last one you need.

Damn bad news. My XL was shipped last week. I'm gonna drive the piss out of it while still under warranty. If it's gonna break, it'll break at Ford's expense.
I hope every thing works out. Let us know what they do to the trans and if it worked.

I wonder what the whirring is. Mine has always whirred from 1st to 3rd only on the first shift of the trip, usually when trying to go only about 10-15mph.

My dealer is treating me good. Delivered a loaner to my house and has had excellent communication. I’m just glad I’m getting a complete transmission and not just a repair. I was worried about that.

Every new vehicle I have owned has had its issues within the first 10k miles and then they are fine after that. Even a 2001 Toyota Tundra I bought new had issues within the first 10k .

On our job site one year the rental company gave us brand new Flagro heaters for temporary heat when every other year we would get the older 2-3 year old heaters. That year we had more issues with those new heaters then we ever had with the old ones.
Yes you are correct, the term for this in Quality Assurance is "infant mortality" . Meaning that things are more likely to fail when things are new due to a defective part. After XXX? Miles defective parts should show themselves. In the electronics industry, high reliability products are run in elevated temps for a week to try to weed out suspect parts. The only way to do this with cars is to put 1000? Miles in them before selling them, which is logistically impossible and people would not want to buy a brand new car with thousands of miles on it. So sadly some of us get cars/trucks that have infant mortality issues.
Former Director of Quality Assurance for a company that made electronics sold to Oil Refineries and Nuclear Power plants.

Here is an excellent vid I watched this weekend regarding the 10 speeds, both GM and Ford. About halfway through, they discuss valve body design in these newer trucks. OEM knows these designs are troublesome and the after market has identified the fixes, but the big boyz only want to get you through warranty and then they could care less about you-

It's a little long, but was very interesting.

I agree with you. It would be nice to hear more good experiences.
2023 XL 3.5 here. While my miles are low (sub 4k), my transmission didn't experience any issues and after the Ford Performance tune, it performs even better.

Best of luck!

As of right now I am disappointed in the Ford Proactive Dealer Team. I’ve attempted to call and email without a response or call back. I was able to talk to another agent today which made notes to my account. He said it’s not common for Ford to extend “good will gestures” for customers in a situation like mine, but it has happened in the past.

As of this point I don’t feel like Ford values its customers.

Yikes! What a horror story!
As the owner of a brand new Lariat, I sure hope you took the hit for the team and it's a one-off.

I talked to Ford Corporate today, and they said they can’t do anything, and I have to work with the dealer if I want them to provide an additional warranty. They said I also have the option to have the dealer take the truck back, and have them provide a similar one. The second option sounds like too much trouble. I really like the truck and would rather just have the warranty and be on my way. I don’t think it’s too much to ask.

My unsolicited 2 cents: you are too close to zero miles for them to give you more warranty. Also, they usually only add additional warranty to offset being without your truck while waiting for parts for extended period, etc. The additional warranty cost to Ford is cheaper than a buyback. Your truck will get a new transmission at 500 miles in a timely manner. No additional warranty warranted from their seat.

That is unacceptable. A new truck shouldn't drop it's transmission 500 miles off the lot. Ford obviously still has major problems with their 10R80s. They should be doing everything in their power to keep my trust in the vehicle and their brand. If not, they don't care about their customers once they sign the contract.

You must not be aware of large corporations allegiance to shareholders and profits...

They sold 460,000 F-150s in 2024, your transmission failure at 500 miles is one out of 460,000... It happens.

Your truck is getting fixed. If you don't have confidence in the brand, go elsewhere.
