Skipping second gear when starting from stopped. Always going from first gear to third gear, not going to second.

When starting from a stopped position, I notice that the second gear is never used. My truck is in first gear when I am stopped. When I start moving, even very slowly, the second gear is never used. The transmission goes from first to third gear. Does my transmission has a problem or is this normal? Thank you for any input. I have a F150 Lariat 2023, built in November 2023, engine is the Coyote 5.0L.

Normal. Sport or tow/haul mode it will not skip 2nd. At least not as often.

Mine is the same, just give it a tad more gas and you will find 2'nd

My '21 5.0 did the same and skipped others at higher speeds. Totally normal.

Is a dealer able to program the trans to use 2nd every time? The 1st to 3rd shift is usually either clumsy or straight jerky if you're trying to go 10-20mph in the neighborhood.

I absolutely don't want to do a tune.

Mine did this for over a year.
Never bothered me.
But 40k miles later, always does the 1-2-3.
Took awhile to learn my habits I guess.
Never bothered with having it looked into.

My truck 2019 3.5 eco boost started out like yours so, I usually just drove a bit quicker than I wanted to, then this week as I was exiting an offramp I gave it gas and no grab just pegged the tach I'm just glad no one was behind me as I was down to about 5mph before it grabbed and I was able to limp it home and of course it happens at 8000 miles over the 60,000 mile powertrain warranty.

I got a 23' and it skips 2nd quite often on flat ground driving easy, but if I am on an incline it will use 2nd. Also if a hit it hard from a stop to gain speed on the highway entrance ramp it will use every gear to accelerate and shift fast. Also sport mode and tow mode it never misses a gear unless it is on a decline grade (down hill).
