PSA: Check your air filters

I just checked my engine air filter and it’s quite filthy for 29k miles. It’s all relative to how dusty of an environment etc. but I figured it was worth a friendly reminder. I went ahead and bought the cabin filter as well for good measure

Ford made it really easy to check/replace since you don’t need any tools, there are just 2 clips

Nope this was the first time changing it, seems odd that the dealership never mentioned it. I think it’s pretty clear they aren’t checking it ?

Good to know, It’s right about on schedule then. I couldn’t remember the interval, but next service appt I will be adding diffs, tranny and t-case since I’m not fond of Fords intervals on those

I prefer the 10,000 mile interval no matter whose filter it is

For as cheap as air filters are, I usually change them annually in December when we change our smoke alarm batteries.

oh my dealer makes sure they check them all
my wifes edge recently was in and they got me for a pricey cabin filter i could have picked up at wall world for 9 bux
that will never happen again

the rest i let them change out
but 20 something for a cabin filter refresh thing is a little to much for me to swallow 2x

A new air filter provides the least amount of particle filtration same as with a new fuel filter. These are designed so that the engine gets enough air up to the good through mileage date.

I prefer not to add more than is necessary to the local landfill, especially when there is no real gain.

I check mine when I think of it. If it's dirty I will blow it out with 100 psi air from the compressor. I usually won't change it until it becomes so clogged that I can't remove anymore dirt by banging it against the fender. I know this because I have black smoke from the tailpipe and fuel milage goes into the toilet. ?

I use a washable filter.
Kept it from my 2011.
Gets cleaned every year with no sign of wearing out.

I thought standard language at dealerships was that the filters needed changed, regardless of what they looked like, if the tech even bothered to look. My wife took her car in and they said the filters needed changed. I changed the cabin and engine filters out before it even went in. The service advisor was flustered when she said they were just changed and asked why it needed done again. Needless to say, we no longer go to that dealership.

As many others said, I change both filters at every oil change. I would be comfortable doing it every other, but it's easier to not have to remember and the added cost and time is minimal.

Smoke from the fires in Canada is no help for our filters.
