last time I bought filters for the truck I bought six. That’ll give me by for a while. I’ve thought about buying more.

I did the same thing when I heard about the Fram Endurance, now there may be a bad manufacturing issue and I have one I’m waiting to finish emptying to cut open and see if I have a bad batch.

The Microgard Select and Carquest filters have consistently been the top reviewed filters on lots of "cut open" videos and the reviews on BITOG confirmed this.

I bought a couple of the OEM fitment since I was still under factory warranty. I also bought several of the larger FL820s version to have an extra half quart of capacity with more filter media. I ran one of these during my first OCI with Valvoline restore and protect.

Not sure it came up here but apparently NAPA Gold is now made by the same company that makes the Microgard Selects.

Video I watched last night compared Microgard Select and new NAPA Gold (not the part numbers for the 3.5L Ecoboost F150) and almost identical other than hole count on the face (NAPA had fewer holes, but larger sized) and NAPA had a bit more square footage of filter material. I think the NAPA Gold is a few bucks more than Microgard, but it appears you do get a bit more filter material.

My other non-expert question.... what is bypass pressure and does it matter vs the Motorcrafts? No idea if they're different or not but I saw Microgard and NAPA mentioned at 22PSI bypass pressure.

As a follow up to my prior post, I am not advising that people should not research filters prior to purchase. However, be aware that older information may no longer be accurate and unless you buy your filters in bulk, they may be constructed differently the next time you purchase them.

In researching filters, one should inquire as to the micron particle ratings. That makes a difference also.

Picked up NAPA Gold 7502 yesterday. "Made in Vietnam" is right on the filter label.

Question still remains if the Microgard Select MSL57502 is also Vietnamese.

I won't cut them open but from looks and weight, I would guess these are the same filter...

NAPA: " Laboratory Test Performance per ISO 454812: 18 Grams Dirt (NAPA Gold # 1515), 99% Efficient At 30 Microns (Based On NAPA Gold # 1515, 1356, 7060) "

Microgard: " 99 percent efficiency (Laboratory Test Performance per ISO 4548-12 at 25 microns). "

Now take a walk on the wild side and buy the FL820s fitment. More media, more capacity, no noticeable difference in oil pressure. It was a win-win for me.

Microgard Select is the only one I’m running now.

The AMSOIL AEO17 let me down badly……
The Fram Endurance suffers the same flaw. Ripples on the spring plate do not allow it to sit properly, so, it leaks allowing unfiltered oil past.

Finally got around to cutting open the most recent FRAM endurance in my truck, no ripples thankfully, gives me some faith in the remaining stash I have, but I will likely explore the microguards when my current stash is depleted.

Basically, this is shows light escaping where there should not be any at the spring plate stamping that is faulty.

it’s not just a frame problem. There are more than a few brands affected with this, including Amsoil

Be aware, if a failure is developing, by the time you can see it in the filter, it is beyond saving.

I understand what both you and @FaaWrenchBndr are saying.

I’m saying that the ripples in the spring plate that appear to allow unfiltered oil past the media aren’t apparent in the FRAM I cracked open, I haven’t been able to do the light test to see if it suffers the same bad stamping.

I’m not going to sit here and say I no longer have any reservations regarding the FRAM, but I’m not about to rush out and replace the new one I put in the truck either.

Your truck, your choices.
I’m a maintenance freak, I probably over maintain everything.

Oil and filters are cheap…….engines aren’t.

Is the bypass valve psi rating the same on the 820?
I’ve seen even ratings from 8-20 psi on all the filters I checked out

I can’t find the link right now, but IIRC both of the filters from Microgard that I took a picture of were rated at 16-20 psi. That info was from an independent test I think, since Microgard/O’reillys don’t have it listed.
