Interesting. Is this the easy tell? By that, I wonder if the combo of shifter not folding and service soon light always points to those codes.
It was for me. I just read the common denominator responses here. But what was strange to me was that my shifter always felt sloppy, like had a lot of play in it. The new one is super tight. So when in park or drive, it does not move forward or backward at all.

Hi! If you send us a message with your VIN and local Ford dealer, I can see how I can assist.
I just got this error, and my 2024 has 200 miles on it, took to dealer they said bad battery so they replaced with a new one. The very next day happened again, and now my shifter won’t lay down

Thanks for the response! ?

I posted the below to another area on this forum and realized it appeared to be in the wrong area. Reposting here to hopefully help someone out.

I have a 2024 PB Lariat. I have approximately 12k miles. I like it, but last night it left me stranded at a stop light. I had a "Powertrain Malfunction/Reduced Power" message pop-up on the way home, but it was running fine. Temps all within range and I didn't even have the a/c on despite it being well above 90 degrees. The truck started to shake a little at the red light so I put the shifter into neutral and that's when things went south. I tried several times to put it in park. I turned it off and back on several times but no luck. I tried disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes and in the end it's stuck in neutral with the gear selector light blinking in neutral. Luckily, Ford roadside showed up within an hour. It's at the dealer

Ford Motor Company called today to follow up on my experience and to provide an update on my truck. That was not expected, but nice. They shared there is a recall that is in the process of being issued for the center console gear shifter. Apparently they are failing and mine happened to fail. The dealer diagnosed, ordered the part and it is scheduled to be installed later this week or early next week at the latest. I do have an ESP with 1 day rental. I was put in a rental first thing this morning.

In all, I'm pleased with the service. Not pleased with my truck breaking down, especially with what seamed like every competitor turning around to go by me just to give that look of "you should have bought one of this brand of truck instead". A lot or folks actually circled back to check on me, which was very nice. What I learned is if I ever have the "Powertrain Malfunction/Reduced Power" message pop-up again, I'm pulling over and getting the truck towed to the nearest dealer.

I think checking to see if the shifter does not fold down after the Powertrain Malfunction appears for verification is inviting the malfunction to get worse. I've had this alert come and go more than two dozen times. Based on what everyone has been sharing, I'm not about to touch the fold-down button.

My 2024 XLT 5.0 just popped the Powertrain malfunction alert with wrench (8800 +/- miles) twice over the last week or so. First one clear on its own and second one hung fired for about 2 hours. I called the dealer who loggers into my vehicle via connect service portal and confirmed the alerts and pulled up the service bulletin. Dropped truck off for indeterminate stay. Given Ford (a) knows about this problem and (b) has my vehicle’s in his “connected service” portfolio and can see the alerts why weren’t they proactive and call me???

yikes…just got mine into the dealer Monday for the infamous “Powertrain malfunction/reduce power …get service soon” alert. They had it for two days and confirmed it’s the shit module according to Ford Service Bulletin and soon to be issued recall notice. Of course the part is on b/o with no ETA available. The service consultant called me and said come pick it up as it no problem to drive it with the malfunction alert. However, based what others stated it concerns me that Ford isn’t completely transparent about potential unintended consequences of a “software” program bug or wiring problems. I located a copy of the Service Bulletin and it indicated that there is a potential plug-pin losing connection due to a manufacturing defect in either the plug or the shift module receptacle. Case in point our Lincoln Nautilus Black Label received an over the air (WiFi) software update that resulted in a recall as the software up date caused a safety issue with the back up and other cameras in the collision avoidance system. Again, YIKES!!!… YGTBKM…I hope their General Counsel is paying attention and advising Ford’s leadership about what happened to Boeing over bad software on their 737 Max!!! The 21st century vehicle is now so full of software code it’s impossible to avoid going to the dealer for service.

Got mine back yesterday. The shifters are in stock again. So far so good. Like deanfx mentioned above the shifter now feels stiffer than the original. I didn’t realize how much play was in the old shifter. Dealer mentioned when I picked mine up that they had a Lightning in that had the same problem and also needed a new shifter.

My 24 raptor R with 1950 miles is experiencing the same issue where it throws a code but fixes itself after sitting for some time. Every time it throws the code the gear selector won’t lay flat. I Took it to the dealer when it was showing a code just for them to tell me it was too late for them to check the issue and to comeback Monday.

I had my GSM swapped out yesterday as well. It took roughly a week for the part to come in and they had the truck ready to go in about 1.5 hours. The new shifter does feel a little tighter when moving through the positions though I can still wobble it back and forth a bit when it's in place.

I rarely use it so I only found out right before taking it in that my old shifter wouldn't fold down anymore even though the wrench light wasn't lit so it must disable that once the code is stored.

Thought I had a hard failure of my GSM last night. I popped the door handle just as I started to move the shifter into Park in my rush to close a gate before the cattle got through it. Instead of the shifter continuing to automatically move into Park, it froze up with the indicator light flashing. Both the shifter and truck remained immovable. I turned the vehicle off. The GSM indicator light continued to flash after the truck powered down. Several minutes went by as I got my tools out to try disconnecting the batteries when I noticed the GSM light had gone out. I got back in the truck and closed the door before I touched anything. With the gear shift still in the Drive position, I tried to start the truck. The GSM light came on steady and a notice popped up that the truck must be in Park to start. I was able to manually move the shifter into Park, then start the truck. The shifter continued to function after that and got me home.

Note: I realize I am pressing my luck. I've driven 2,500 miles since my first of more than 2 dozen Powertrain malfunction/reduce power alerts (last one still active).

I had my GSM replaced last week after getting the service engine soon light about 4 times in 2 weeks and having two instances of the shifter not unfolding after sitting. They had to order it in and that took a week but I was able to drive it while I waited for the shifter to arrive. Then they went to program the module and said my battery needed to be charged as it was showing to be low. They charged it for an hour and wound up replacing the battery anyway. Killed two birds with one stone on that trip to the dealer. Well worth it to solve the problem to get it in as soon as you can.

It was the gsm. The service advisor said they have been seeing a bunch more come in for that issue. Part is on back order and has an average lead time of 1-3 weeks.
