Having had a 2006 Escape Hybrid (still going strong by the way), I find this F150 Hybrid to be a step beyond that one. Ford has clearly learned much and incorporated it into the PowerBoost. The only drawbacks are the far more numerous number of electrical plugs, the batteries that sat for months as chips were waited out, I'd kinda like a bigger traction battery, and the bonded neutral only setup of the generator feature. My truck so far is flawless and I've got enough miles on it to tell.

I think that is to minimize any difference of potential between items(power tools for example) and the truck chassis.

Has a faulty fuel pump still under warranty. It's probably the exact same fuel pump the 3.5L Ecoboost models use.

The predictable hybrid reliability accusations start flying as a result.

CR uses a survey of dues paying members to produce it's reliability ratings which are dubious at best when assessing old technology vehicles.

On this forum alone I have seen problems and concerns brought up that were actually properly functioning systems the new owner just didn't understand.

"My Powerboost won't go very far in electric only mode. Something's wrong with it." "I'm trying to use the hybrid battery to run my RV, but the engine keeps turning on and I don't want it to, so I took it to the dealer and they can't find anything wrong."

All day. Everyday. Complaints like that get posted here and I understand why. This is brand new to many of us and we're trying to figure out how it works vs. how we thought it worked. This is the forum for that speaking from experience these past 6 months.
Yep. Not to be insensitive to the very real problems there have been, recalls, inexcusably long wait times, parts shortages, software update hiccups of all types and yes, some design flaws and poor executions but that CR report was bogus and a perfect example of the PB getting the blame for things not PB specific.

A lot of it is learning curve, unrealistic expectations and new tech related and some, are down right hard to believe.

I find it extremely implausible, that an entire group of camping friends, all traded in their PBs and went back to hauling generators around. 1? Sure, A pair? Maybe. A group? Really?

Even many of those who do have serious problems, mention loving the truck but for their particular issue.

But don't get me wrong. If mine turns into one of those horror stories, after all reasonable means are exhausted for correction, I won't be bashful about saying so.

There are definitely people who legitimately don’t understand how something works and want to understand. Then there are those who willfully do not understand and don’t want to understand and want to convince everyone who does understand that they are actually wrong.

There is a big difference between saying you don’t like something and don’t want to use it vs it doesn’t work and is bad.

This point is lost on many on the internet.

If you don’t like the generator and you don’t like powerboost in general, that is 100% your right. Further, it is also your right to come here and say you don’t like it and don’t intend to use it. But I would advise anyone not to waste their breath trying to convince the rest of the world of the same.

Similar to the folks who want a base truck with a vinyl bench seat and crank windows. Like it all you want, but don’t waste your time convincing me of how wrong I am to like things like adaptive cruise and a heated steering wheel.

I get the vibe you should give up your username to Mr Sportstechnology. You have a much more open mind!

Yeah, the direct injection requires a diesel like high pressure pump to inject directly into a cylinder and the 3.5's pump runs out of volume around the e30 mark unfortunately. It's still enough to make ~600hp though with e30 and a tune. The 5.0 will eat e85. The 3.5's are supposed to have both cylinder and port injection -- curious if a larger port injector could make up for this. I haven't done a deep dive into the fuel injection system to see if the port injector relies on tank pump pressure or not.

Perhaps an aftermarket company could look into it.
The 5.0 has dual PFDI injection and is flex fuel capable from the factory, it’s all in the fuel pumps flow and fueling strategy. Ethanol has high octane (more power with timing advance) but requires a much higher flow rate. The stock pump on the 5.0 is capable of delivering crazy high volume. From my understating the 5.0 relies primarily on the port injectors at low rpm, and as rpm increases the direct injectors takes over as primary. It’s hard to manage a 12:1 compression ratio and fueling it as revs increase on port injection. From my understanding the 3.5 fueling strategy is the exact opposite, relying primarily on direct injectors at low load and port being supplemented with more load.

2021 Job 1. My transmission was replaced within the first 5000 miles, there was a bad batch of Job 1 Hybrid Drives.

After that, the truck has been trouble free. About to roll over 45000 miles.

Done generator mode camping for a week on the beach at Mustang Island. Truck did the whole thing powering small appliances 24/7. No issues. Have done week long camping trips multiple times while in gen mode.

Most days I drive it gently. Some days I want to punish it and it happily lets me. My monthly payment is how much therapy would cost me anyways. Plus you can’t tow a trailer with a therapist.

I can see how easily problems can happen on this platform, I plan to keep it for the duration of the extended warranty and report back. When I hit 99,995 miles I’ll consider trading it in for another one.
Almost the same experience for me. Job1 truck. Hybrid drive shit the bed at 1,300 miles and was fine after it was replaced until around 20,000 where an O2 sensor wire shorted and the whole truck went nuts. The dealer was chasing demons trying to figure out what was wrong until me and the service manager found the cut wire using old school mechanical techniques (our hands and eyes) instead of trying to chase codes in a computer. Consequently, I think the short/cut wire was caused by another dealer doofus during an oil change, so not a powerboost issue in my mind.

The PB is so powerful it just uses the port injection for intake valve "Bath Time!!" ;)

Seriously though the valve bath is scheduled and they love getting their ears clean.

The 2 most important tools any truly professional mechanic will ever have.
