I always pictured hybrids built sort of like diesel electric locomotives. Electric motors to drive the wheels and an engine of some type to generate the electricity to drive the motors. I would think a small 4 banger would be able to generate enough electricity to power the motors.
The way the Escape Hybrid worked was thru a large planetary gear set. It had two motor/generators, a large one and a smaller one. The ring gear went to the axles, the engine went into the sun gear and the motor/generators went into the planets. The small motor/generator was used to start the engine via this gear set. These two could trade power between them. At full power the engine and large motor/generator could feed the axles. At partial power the engine drove both the axles and charging the traction battery. The 12VDC system was fed by the DC-DC converter. The battery was a series of D-cell NiMH type cells for a total 330VDC portion of the electrical system.

I'm playing devil's advocate with my own theory now. BISG outputs are not typically 12V. Ford has stated there is no torque transmitted to the driveline which eliminates one function of a BISG. That makes sense because we have a traction motor for torque assist. The VBatt connection in the modifiers guide diagram maybe an input and the BISG output is unused. I'm trying to find a detailed schematic of the BISG but it has not been easy thus far. Hamma's current flow experiment could be the key. A Bluetooth DC shunt resistor or similar between the battery and BISG.

It's on the 12v bus just like a traditional starter and alternator with communications lines only.

Right but aren't Ford BISG outputs typically 48V?

I've never seen fords with a 48v architecture onboard, but that's not saying much.

Ford introducing 48V mild-hybrid Fiesta and Focus in Europe
27 March 2019
At a Ford “Go Further” experience in Amsterdam on 2 April, Ford will unveil Fiesta and Focus EcoBoost Hybrid models for Europe.
The Fiesta EcoBoost Hybrid and Focus EcoBoost Hybrid will feature a mild-hybrid architecture with a belt-driven integrated starter/generator (BISG) replacing the standard alternator, enabling recovery and storage of energy usually lost during braking and coasting to charge a 48-volt lithium-ion air-cooled battery pack.
The BISG also acts as a motor, integrating with the low-friction, three-cylinder 1.0‑liter EcoBoost combustion engine and using the stored energy to provide torque assistance during normal driving and acceleration, as well as running the vehicle’s electrical ancillaries.

That's old and applied to Europe Ford, but I'm struggling to find quality BISG information.

What's europe?

I just realized that there's a separate portion of the HS4 bus that's being hidden from us entirely and that's where it's at. I can see these (where appropriate) in the MME...

Here's what our HS4 looks like (as in what it shows us)....

Looks like a serial data/control bus.

It's a separate one that doesn't go through the GWM. It's only talking to the PCM, so perhaps some of its variables can be accessed via the PCM @Snakebitten
