My favorite navigator is my Garmin Nuvi that I used in my previous truck. One time purchase with free updates. I still keep under my rear seat as a backup. Works flawlessly.

I have renewed in the past, and used my Ford Pass points to pay for it.

I use the OEM nav often on all three vehicles that have it. I’ve never renewed the subscriptions though. I get the weather via looking through the windshield and I’m able to judge traffic by the number and frequency of brake lights.
Traffic updates aren’t just for knowing there will be traffic, it’s for providing alternate routes. I travel for work in my truck and I’m often going to places I’ve never been before. If I need to be somewhere at a certain time, it can be helpful to provide an alternate route around traffic that I haven’t hit yet. Especially if I’m somewhere that I’m not familiar.

I would never pay for Nav updates. The map is already outdated by the time its released. Lets say the map update is released in Jan 2025 which means it was probably finalized in late 2024 but that newly designed highway exit was not finalized until April 2025.

The only benefit would be a hardwired connection which would not be dependent on your cell phone.
I have a 2022 Lariat..I use Google maps and have zero issues...I also download maps to phone so I don't have to use Data. Only use offline maps for local driving in my area

Android auto is the only thing I use. But I'm afraid they are going to cripple it going foward to force us to purchase the Ford navigation. Android auto app was just moved to a location on my phone where I cant use it on my phone only. I cant turn off updates now because it's not axstand alone app anymore. It built in to the phones operating system now. With the last update they removed my ability to screen share my phone to the trucks display. I'm going to root my phone to remove the latest update and install a older AA app.
Google is getting really bad at dictating how we communicate between our phone and vehicles.

I believe the OEM nav can take trailer size into account when setting routes. However, I've found the OEM maps that are provided by HERE are outdated at best in a straight inaccurate at worse so I did not renew.
I tow my 33' Airstream and 9 times out of ten I have to disable that feature because if it can't find a "safe" route it refuses to route you. I thought when I first got my Platinum that would be a great feature but it ended up being practically useless in the end.

I hope Ford takes my feedback to them seriously and fixes that.

Ford doesn't listen to anyone but their lawyers and accountants.

You don't need to root. Just uninstall updates. Now download the APK version you want and install it. Disable auto update for AA in the Play Store.

If you don't know what version you want just download (for example) v1.5. Install it. Download and install v1.6. Do you like it? Rinse and repeat until you install the version you don't want; such as v1.7. Uninstall updates again and then install v1.6. Since you disabled auto updates you forever be on v1.6. Well, you will be until Android OS updates and requires a newer AA version. Double check in the Play Store that you've got auto update disabled.

In a few weeks my initial 3-year navigation subscription ends. Thereafter, annual renewal is $80. What are the potential advantages of keeping the OEM subscription? I use Apple Maps and Waze for navigating, and rarely use the truck's navigation app.
I dropped mine when subscription elapsed. I never use it...horrible.. I use Google maps (even offline sometimes) works great and accurate. ..

How much does the navigation subscription come into play for the speed limit display on the instrument cluster? I was led to believe it was the forward camera doing most of it but mine changes to the correct speed limit when no signs are around.

I really like having the current speed limit displayed because Google Maps does an awful job of it and it only displays speed limits for me when I actually have a route going.

For the benefit of others:

We went without the subscription for a bit as we were going to be out of the country for a couple of months.
So we waited until our return to renew.

  • The "Navigate To" voice command rarely worked and would say to turn on connected services.
  • Traffic alerts and alternate/faster routing wasn't provided.
  • Obviously, no map updates either.
We were glad to pay the $80 once we returned.

As a side note, while AA maps are updated more frequently, we have had Google make a handful of really erroneous routings that resulted in significant backtracking and hours of delay.

Never with Sync.

I "navigate to" all the time without subscription. Just need to change how you ask for it. I tend to generically say a restaurant name only and get list of locations nearby. Works well enough for me.
