In a few weeks my initial 3-year navigation subscription ends. Thereafter, annual renewal is $80. What are the potential advantages of keeping the OEM subscription? I use Apple Maps and Waze for navigating, and rarely use the truck's navigation app.

Mine expired in November. Didn't renew it. I don't typically use it for navigation, but I have put the maps on, and everything still seems to work fine without the subscription. I'm sure I don't have traffic or weather updates anymore, but I use my phone for that anyway. I'd try it without and see if you find you're missing anything.

I would never pay for Nav updates. The map is already outdated by the time its released. Lets say the map update is released in Jan 2025 which means it was probably finalized in late 2024 but that newly designed highway exit was not finalized until April 2025.

The only benefit would be a hardwired connection which would not be dependent on your cell phone.

I believe the OEM nav can take trailer size into account when setting routes. However, I've found the OEM maps that are provided by HERE are outdated at best in a straight inaccurate at worse so I did not renew.

Yeah, even when I was paying for connected navigation driving on a 5 year old road it was showing I was not on any road on screen. Here is garbage enough to show things on map that haven't existed for 20 years.

Having said that I use my built in nav all the time without paying for the subscription. Does well enough to get me where I need to go. I did use Android Auto for a 4 state road trip but that was more about wanting traffic data than the maps. It would have got me there but not warn me of all the cops along route.

That’s pretty much it. Paying for the integrated nav package gives you updated maps and live alerts for traffic and such. Without paying, your navigation will still work, but you won’t get those updates.

I paid last time mine was up for renewal but I wouldn’t likely do it again. Sync nav is decent, but it’s no better than Apple Maps, Waze, or Google Maps.

I use the OEM nav often on all three vehicles that have it. I’ve never renewed the subscriptions though. I get the weather via looking through the windshield and I’m able to judge traffic by the number and frequency of brake lights.

I have never used it, so I can't tell you.

I think I've used my phone only 3 or 4 times.

I don't know why you'd pay for navigation when your phone is free and does the same thing.

I use mine because we explore a lot on back roads where there is no cell service. You can plan a route on Apple maps before you head out and it will continue to work with GPS. You can't initiate a route without cell service.

"PowerBeast" - our 2021 F150 Lariat 4x4 Powerboost
For the benefit of others:

We went without the subscription for a bit as we were going to be out of the country for a couple of months.
So we waited until our return to renew.

  • The "Navigate To" voice command rarely worked and would say to turn on connected services.
  • Traffic alerts and alternate/faster routing wasn't provided.
  • Obviously, no map updates either.
We were glad to pay the $80 once we returned.

As a side note, while AA maps are updated more frequently, we have had Google make a handful of really erroneous routings that resulted in significant backtracking and hours of delay.

Never with Sync.
