sorry if this has been covered extensively...i just want to confirm before i sign off on the job...it looks like there are a few variations of the generac a lot of people are using. that's just the receptacle for the most part? electrician sent part number over, 6854-1; i just wanted one last reassurance that's the one/will work.

6854 works! I wouldn’t worry about the -1. Probably something to do with the inlet box

I first had the 6852, same as the 6854 but without the plug. The electrician I hired had me get the 9854 because it has larger gauge wire. I have a 40 amp sub panel working off my generac panel which serves my finished basement. But yes, this type works with the PB when properly installed

It will be interesting to see how it's connected. I believe if you add a secondary panel you are supposed to remove the bonding screw on the secondary panel. Probably a lot of people don't remove it... I wonder if this could be the difference between working and not working in some situation. Anyway I spoke to an electrician this week-end and he always switch the 2x hots and the neutral on the generator panel as this is the safest way. I know several members don't share that thought :)

So i had a chance this weekend to inspect my fathers generator panel. Everything is connected the proper way for a "normal" generator panel. Started tracing the cables and junction boxes from the panel to the generator. On the last box, the box that goes from Romex to SO cord, There is no ground. The 15ft cord has only 3 conductors. Pulled the plug apart and yep, 3 wires connected only.

So, nice for him, If he cares its an easy fix less than 100 bucks. And for me? I know why my truck powered his house. LOL

Yves mentioned removing the Bonding screw in the secondary panel. The key is the neutral ground bond must be done in only one place, likely the main panel. However check with your electric company as mine requires the bonding be done outside in the meter box. They tell you to remove the screw in the main panel when installing it and bond in the Meter box when they hookup to it. Again the key is only one place.

Thanks for sharing your findings. I don't get why people would not connect the ground between each electrical boxes and plugs. In my mind this is a dangerous pratice not doing it.

Many people dont see the grounds as necessary. As far as my father goes, He was as surprised as I that he used the wrong cord to connect the generator. Only thing he can think of is it was just something he had laying around because everything else is correct. Just not the flexible cord that goes to the generator itself.

I had a transfer switch installed on the house today. Most of my appliances, HVAC, and hot water heater are gas. I haven’t tested it yet. Has anyone else done this yet? I’m thinking the 7.2 kw can power most of the house.
I only have an inlet and an interlock kit. I had to lift the ground off in my generator cord in order for the bonded-neutral in my truck to work with this setup. I ran the whole house, including heat pump water heater, heat pump air conditioning with no issue... Really stressed it out running the microwave and it lagged a bit getting the microwave to turn on but it still ran it no problem.

I'd say you'd get most if not all your house just fine

i dunno. whatd you guys pick? this'll give us living room, fridge, one bathroom, internet, and furnace. i dont even know if internet works in a power outage. lol. open to feedback.

Depends on your internet providers infrastructure. I have fiber into the closet, and I've never had a power outage wide enough to kill internet. Fire up the generator and the internet works, even during hurricane Harvey. YMMV.

The 6854 can handle 8 breakers and up to 10 if you use tandem. " 8 circuits, expandable to 10 circuits; accepts standard, tandem, GFCI and arc fault breakers". So my guess is yes you can replace the double 30A. I would believe the internet providers have some power backup as well but you have to make sure that your internet's equipment is connected to your panel. This is easy to verify....turn off all the breakers of your generac panel and confirm if you still have wifi.

yeah, i have that box in the lower right corner that is my fiber service off the street. that little box that is powered by the plug above it. also controls some garage lights/door openers/sprinkler. so that is one 15. then in my master bathroom is the master closet that has the junction box where the router actually lives, so that's another 15 taken up. but should allow internet if it still works. actually...i probably should have realized this sooner, but im pretty sure we get notifications for internet out when power goes out too, hah. we'll see. i thought this was just a core set of functions should the power be down for days. (just moved to NTX). i'll keep looking into swapping those two 30s. im dense when it comes to this stuff....don't know if you could just add in 2 individual 15s, or 20s, instead.

I'm not sure what type of breaker would fit in the Generac panel but if you could use something like this, https://www.canadabreakers.ca/products/dnpl153015, you would be able to keep your 30A for your AC and gain 2x 15A circuit. I would recommend that you talk to your electrician as I don't know much about the Generac product. Potentially someone in this forum have the answer....
