Anyone here who has installed the Generac 6854 30amp switch and actually used it, do you feel it covers your power needs? I’d like to install one, but would have to do some serious power management while using it. And the PPO can supply double that capacity.

What about a neutral switching transfer switch with 2 hot legs for 30amp @ 240v? Does that exist?

Sorry just saw the 9850 is 240V. Anyone running that one?

I have the Generac and the 8 circuits works fine for me. Some people have used a "double" breaker to get 10 circuits. But I have not had an issue.

Consider too that this set up will not be for the rest of your life and only until the power gets restored. I have the furnace, fridge, MBedroom and remote bedroom, my office (my business). If need be I run an extension to anywhere else I would need from the house plugs serviced by the Powerboost. A couple of room AC's if needed.

I'm running the 6852 30AMP and thanks to mini split breakers I have twelve 120 volt circuits and four 240 volt circuits (8 slots in transfer switch become 16). This lets me run every room in the house plus the patio and garage and 2 fridges, one freezer plus one of our AC units. I've only run it to test and it didn't use even half of my 7.2kw from the truck. Did not connect microwave or washer dryer and we have gas heating for water, furnace and stove. Very happy with the set up and install was straight forward.

Recently put one of these in. Discovered that on shifting to the truck, it trips the truck on a ground fault. It then resets and works fine from the truck. Apparently on shifting the switching mechanism is a make before break sequence. That then trips the ground fault sense in the truck. But then after the transfer there is no neutral ground bond to be sensed and it operates fine. Note: Square D makes an AFCI tandem breaker in its HOM line of breakers, these can be used in the Generac panel.

Please share the brand and model you have, and if you don't mind costs for the unit and installation.

Thanks!
Generac Model 6852. I did the install myself (Wyoming codes allow homeowner). Panel ran around $380 from Lowes. Associated hardware was on hand, probably some $50-75 for wire and other hardware; I did not end up using the provided wiring. I installed Homeline CAFCI breakers (2 were tandem types and note that Homeline makes Tandem CAFCIs) in place of the provided breakers (which were not CAFCI types) for about $460 from HomeDepot. Took me about two days work. I used this instead of installing a larger whole house panel because I needed the 10 extra breaker slots. Why CAFCIs? Electric codes now require new installs to use CAFCIs. Besides, why not? They provide a level of protection from fires unattainable any other way. Also note that Generac rates the panel for up to 10 (120VAC) circuits not 12. You do this by using 2 tandem breakers.
