13 Gas Brands That Are a Waste of Money
LOL, why is it I have a feeling clicking the link will try and suck some IQ points down the drain. We've covered this topic in other threads. Gasoline quality standards are mandated by both federal and state govts. There are 'base' grades, but there are no 'negative' grades. There are toptier brands as well as brands like shell whose additive package is above toptier. There are no brands that are a "waste of money".

oof, so I threw it in a sandbox and yeah, it's just as dumb as I was suspecting. Just one of those long-running clickbait nonsense sites along the lines of '15 things you should do' or '10 reasons your dog does' 'Women love it when you' '10 celebrity opinions on who you should vote for'

In California 100% of the gasoline sold at the pumps is produced by only two refineries. A refinery cannot produce 7500 gallon batches specific to the gas station where it will be delivered and with a double tank trailer they do not split up the gas for one station versus another. Regular versus premium but not Shell versus Exxon. It does not require much in the way of critical thinking to realize that gas is gas at the pumps. One station may turn over their inventory faster and so have less water in the gas or may have the new season blend sooner than a lower volume gas station but that is all that is going to be different.

But the gas companies make a great deal of profit in charging more and they get away with doing this by marketing their product as having some magical additives. As a teenager the Shell and Cheveron and Texaco gas stations were selling gas for $0.30 to $0.35 per gallon while the independent stations were selling regular gas for $0.20 to $0.23 per gallon. Getting 50% more for a gallon of gas more than doubles the profits for the oil company.

Take a minutes to lookup the profit increases for companies like Exxon and Shell and Chevron over the past 10 years and it will be obvious the extent to which they are exploiting their customers.

In college I was acquaintances with a small station owner. He was saying that one of the name brands was trying to get him to 'brand' with them and he thought it was a waste as he'd have to redo all signage/branding and it was at least $50k, then they also wanted 3 cents premium for every gallon sold -- for the exact same gas he was already selling.

40 CFR 1090.260 - Gasoline deposit control standards
40 CFR 1090.265 - Gasoline additive standards
40 CFR Subpart C - Subpart C—Gasoline Standards

Bottom-line is all gasoline sold has to meet minimum federal detergent standards to prevent deposits. All additives used and additive manufacturers must be registered. Fuel blenders know this, so you cannot buy an on-highway fuel that doesn't meet the standard.

Top Tier is an additional industry standard, but does it make itself any better than what is already required or is it a money maker for the folks pedaling it? As mentioned in previous threads, by a bottle of Techron concentrate and use the appropriate ounces per tank if you are really worried about it.

How exactly is it a "waste of money"? Have you, or anyone else, used one of these and their vehicle seized because of it?
I use several of the brands 'featured' in that "article", engine starts every time I press the START button and runs until I press it again. In some areas, (PA for example), Sheetz is the only station you can find and millions of people put that fuel in the vehicles and drive off without any problem.

Here is a Consumers Report article that quotes testing by an independent lab.. The comments here are right about all gasoline coming from the same refineries. The difference is in the additives.
The summary of the article is that according to the independent lab test results, while all gasoline has to meet certain standards, top tier gas results in less carbon build up.

Having said that, I used NON top tier gas in my last Ford F 150 for 260k miles (pumped gas at the HEB store around the corner from where I live) and had no issues with the engine or the whole truck for that matter...

Yes, I've seen that 'click-bait' ad on MSN before and wasted 1 minute of my life watching it.....gas stations get all their gas from regional tank farms or bulk storage facilities and then I would presume the specific brand of gas (Chevron, BP, Sunoco) would add their own additives according to their specs or advertisements....it ALL comes from the same pipeline....Cheers

I used to buy from Amoco because it was between work and home. Rough idles, shitty mpg, carbon deposits on top of pistons. Switched to Meijer and Costco exclusively. MPG is higher, idles like a tesla, and cleaner valves/pistons head.

The difference in gas brands is the detergent levels added to the gas. The detergent is what makes it burn cleaner.
There definitely is a difference between the top tier (Chevron, Shell, …) and unbranded (Maverick, Pilot, etc…).
It’s not a “night and day” difference between tanks. It’s a long term difference as your car’s computer won’t settle in and will constantly be trying to adjust to the difference (if you constantly change brands).
This result is poorer gas mileage.
A car running lower tier gas will “settle in” once the computer can adjust to the consistent type of gas. Of course the longer term will also result on lower gas mileage compared to running top tier.
There is also a difference in top tier gas but that is much less noticeable.
