I would post your vin so i can look at the current state of the truck. Is your APIM displaying a version in the about sync?

Thanks for the information that is super helpful. My VIN is 1FTEW1EP0MKD76448. My about sync if I am looking at the right spot says Version 22177_Product Revision 473

If that is the version you’re at you are in good shape. You are starting not too far behind

2. In the directions with the USB it says to power off the truck, open the door, and wait for the truck to go in sleep mode. When doing that do you close the door, lock it, or just leave the door open and get the fob as far away as possible for 10 minutes?
I open the door and close it, but let it set for 10 minutes. I've even left the keys in the truck before without ill effect.

F150 has been downloading an APIM update for 2hrs now (took ~3hrs, server would only feed 10Mb most of the time, only one file was delivered at 25Mb) -- it's failed 3x, but would resume. Anyone know what it's bringing?

This update is 6GB -- the last few were ~4GB.
The last big MME APIM update was 6GB

A question for the more experienced folks, can USB updates be installed via the USB-C port in the console, or can they only go through the USB-A port? I thought I saw someone post that they used a USB-C flash drive, but I can't recall. I was looking for a way to have a slightly faster install time (maybe) of updates via that method.

Either one works fine, I've updated via both successfully.

I think I am finally ready to attempt this after reading this thread way more times then I would like to admit to familiarize myself with the process and feel comfortable doing It. Seems as updates may never come OTA on my 21. I did just have 3 questions.

1. I bought my truck used, do I need to be worried if he prior owner changed anything in forscan since I don’t have an original built saved (I have noticed a few features on that make it seem like forscan was used by the prior owner).
2. In the directions with the USB it says to power off the truck, open the door, and wait for the truck to go in sleep mode. When doing that do you close the door, lock it, or just leave the door open and get the fob as far away as possible for 10 minutes?
3. in the directions with the USB it says to format it. Is that as simple as plugging it in the computer and it giving me an option to format as a certain type or what do I need to know about that?

Other then those 3 things I thing the write ups are great and I am finally ready to tackle this. Thanks to anyone that can clear up these questions I have.
Good morning! I'd like to look into your OTA update concerns on my end. Feel free to send over a private message with your VIN and dealership info at your earliest convenience.

I'm nearing 4 hours into it and still copying files to the USB. It's the same one I've used previously and the download didn't really take much longer than normal.

Mine took much longer than usual. I was being limited by the distribution server. My guess is that at the time of day I was doing it, ford was pushing data to vehicles. Given how people complain, my guess is that they've got so much bandwidth to use and that's why things trickle out like they do. A smart use of hosted services is to get a plan that you can maximize. I probably could have waited a day or two and it would have come to the truck anyway due to EA.

Yea I figured that. It's definitely copying smaller chunks at a time just watching the storage on the USB fill up.

So, when I was doing the 3.5.3 APIM update on FDRS, I watched Task Manager while it was copying files to the USB drive. It was limited to 2-3 MB/s for the entire transfer. It would bounce between ~1.9-3.5 MB/s, depending on the file size. Much slower than the USB bus can support. There was also a higher than normal CPU usage, so I'm wondering if the program does something to the file after download while writing them to the USB drive.

FDRS as a program is a mess. Legacy auto is, well, legacy

I believe that as the PC is writing the usb it is running a constant checksum in the back ground to insure each file is written out correctly block by block. There insuring that the file won't error after install. Similar to a bios update on a PC. Slow and old school, but it guarantees the software is correct before installing.

You must have not had the pleasure of using IDS every day. ;)

Fortunately or unfortunately “non legacy” auto is quickly finding out why certain things are done certain ways. Android Automotive on the Swedish street is a great example of that.

No, I've already lost countless productivity on other ventures playing with my vehicles. Sometimes you just have to do things for you. Basically the same style 'work', just different results :)
