ECU module programming guide using FDRS

I got a fail on the IPMA update. I’ve been running out checking my laptop periodically and we made dinner and I went out laptop screen was black I had to log back into windows and had a fail. I was about 2 hours into the update too. Truck seems dead. I have 14.4 amps steady in the app on the battery. I have it on a solid charger. So sad…

It’s not dead. Make sure to set your laptop to never sleep when plugged in. Shut the doors for a bit and start over.

Don't take this wrong, but you are taking the same risky approach as many dealerships do.
The tab is running at $150 an hour, yet they aren't dedicated to the procedure. Going to lunch or walking away and doing something else.

It's a calculated risk, I understand. But I'm not going to walk away during a firmware write to an expensive component on the truck. Fortunately, it appears that Ford has made it pretty difficult to totally brick a truck even if the user inadvertently interrupts the procedure.

Still, I advise some worthy caution.

Did you have your negative connected to the the battery post or to a frame ground? Looks like the truck didn't see the charging. The negative needs to be on a bolt head or non painted frame point.

Yes, continue as long as the charger is keeping the battery up in power supply mode.

Thanks for your input. It’s hard for me to sit there for 3-5 hours and watch but now that I’m aware I’m going to make it a priority. I can’t commit to that particular update again until tomorrow. But I’ve made a few changes to my laptop and I’m hoping it doesn’t goto sleep again on me when I attempt after work tomorrow.

I’m on the bolt head that’s pictured in the first post. You can see that the app says 13.6 volts. That warning makes no sense if you read it but maybe I’m getting sleepy.

As long as all 3 lights in the lower corner of the fdrs screen are green, continue.

Have seen this once or twice. I just gave the battery time to charge above 80% and all was good. I have used a basic 15A charger which has worked great.

Several times, but I forget what FDRS version it started in. It's just another screen for dealer techs to ignore that was put in solely due to their ignorance and failure to read other prompts.

Based on your stats, the only update I'd question starting is the IPMA due to the state of charge stat and length of time that update takes. If your charger/power supply keeping up during the process on shorter updates though, you'll be fine.
