ECU module programming guide using FDRS

Several times, but I forget what FDRS version it started in. It's just another screen for dealer techs to ignore that was put in solely due to their ignorance and failure to read other prompts.

Based on your stats, the only update I'd question starting is the IPMA due to the state of charge stat and length of time that update takes. If your charger/power supply keeping up during the process on shorter updates though, you'll be fine.

The software wrote the program to the usb drive but unfortunately when I insert the usb drive into the port I don’t get any type of update or anything on the ball rolling.

I had that on the last APIM update I did. After about 15 min of waiting, I turned my truck off, let it sit for 10 min, then turned it back on and the update kicked off once everything came back up.

I’m on the bolt head that’s pictured in the first post. You can see that the app says 13.6 volts. That warning makes no sense if you read it but maybe I’m getting sleepy.

Actually, the warning makes a lot of sense. You can estimate a battery’s state of charge from its voltage only when it‘s at rest. When it’s being charged, the battery voltage is whatever the charger is putting out. Your battery is very depleted (50% SOC) despite what the voltage reads. You could have a real problem if something were to happen to the charger during programming because you have no reliable backup source of power. That’s why FDRS checks for both adequate voltage from the charger and enough reserve power from the battery (80% SOC) to complete most sessions. It would be a really good idea to throw your battery on a charger for several hours and start your next session with a full charge to provide that reserve power source.

I will charge the battery before I continue. I was able to complete the ipma update through the night so at least the trucks safe. I am learning so much !!!

Well I got all done today and it took about 5 hours. I was on the fence for awhile about attempting it. Being in my mid 60's and not very techie I was nervous something would go wrong but it all went pretty smooth thanks to this thread!

Im playing the apim waiting game, ive disconnected the battery twice done a few hard resets and master resets i drove the truck backwards drove it with a blindfold and still waiting....i saw something about clearing something with forscan but i dont have that program yet.

I think I am finally ready to attempt this after reading this thread way more times then I would like to admit to familiarize myself with the process and feel comfortable doing It. Seems as updates may never come OTA on my 21. I did just have 3 questions.

1. I bought my truck used, do I need to be worried if he prior owner changed anything in forscan since I don’t have an original built saved (I have noticed a few features on that make it seem like forscan was used by the prior owner).
2. In the directions with the USB it says to power off the truck, open the door, and wait for the truck to go in sleep mode. When doing that do you close the door, lock it, or just leave the door open and get the fob as far away as possible for 10 minutes?
3. in the directions with the USB it says to format it. Is that as simple as plugging it in the computer and it giving me an option to format as a certain type or what do I need to know about that?

Other then those 3 things I thing the write ups are great and I am finally ready to tackle this. Thanks to anyone that can clear up these questions I have.

No.

This isnt all that important. Just waiting 10 -15 mins as the instructions say is all that matters. The later updates its 10 mins.

Formatting a USB in windows is easy. Right click the drive and select format. Select ExFat. Start. Make sure to name the USB Sync. Long USB names cause issues.



I would post your vin so i can look at the current state of the truck. Is your APIM displaying a version in the about sync?

Thanks for the information that is super helpful. My VIN is 1FTEW1EP0MKD76448. My about sync if I am looking at the right spot says Version 22177_Product Revision 473

I've used the same USB drive about a dozen times already. I just delete the files on it and let FDRS do its thing.

4.2.4 in the MME has added "voice feedback to ford" -- I don't think they want me to tell them what I really think about laggy ass issues of sync 4a.

At least the youtube app got an update so watching youtube on the screen while charging is actually doable now.
