USB Update Procedure:

Once done, you will see a Restart Required prompt on your SYNC screen. At this point turn ignition OFF and open the driver door. DO NOT REMOVE THE FLASH DRIVE. Wait at least 10 minutes, close the driver door and turn ignition ON.
I have found this to NOT be accurate. Upon receiving the Restart Required, turn ignition OFF and open the driver's door THEN CLOSE THE DRIVERS DOOR (you can optionally lock it). Now wait until the truck goes into a shutdown state (can take 5-30 minutes), which can be determined by keeping an eye on the ambient lighting surrounding the rear seat USB and power ports. When they fully turn off, the truck is likely in its sleep state. Also, I would recommend NOT keeping the smart key anywhere near the truck after you've turned the ignition OFF and opened/closed the door. When you go to check on the truck's sleep status, leave your key far away from the truck so it doesn't wake back up.

When I tried the original recommendation above, every single USB update failed. When I used the modified procedure describe in my post, the USB updates worked every single time.

Hope this helps!

Hey all,
Brought my 2021 Job 1 truck in 2 days ago to the dealership to attempt to get OTA's updating (and perform recalls 22B08 and 22S17) and just got it back. They ended up replacing the GWM as well as successfully performed the APIM recovery (TSB 22-2150 I believe). Been an issue since October when the dealership attempted and update and broke it - updates were greyed out and was stuck on 1.7.1.

Two questions:
1. What version am I on now (21146_Product Revision 145)? I get confused with how it aligns with https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Power-Up_Version_History.
2. Typically how long before I receive an OTA after the fix or am I still stuck?

Before:

After (today):

I had the dealer repair mine in late March -- repair the failed 1.7.1. Like yours, mine updated to the same version.

In about 2 weeks, mid April, I received the 2.1 update, with no change to version. Since that OTA update, I have received 4 FAILED OTA updates for 2.1.1. Going to the dealer 6/6 for him to manually update the GWM/

I took my truck into dealer for the BC activation and they made it past the IPMA update and are now stuck on an APIM update. When the truck asks to be restarted, we shut it off, wait 10 min for all lights to go out, turn it back on and the same screen comes up asking to restart vehicle. Previous APIM updates have been successful. Any ideas what the problem could be? VIN 1FTFW1ED3MFA93822

Looks like someone tried to complete the update without the USB finishing. Shows that it failed due to validation. Have you tried to running the update again and reloading the USB?

The update has been run at least 5 times and same problem every time. We make sure key fob is far away from vehicle and wait 20 min for complete shutdown before restarting.

Watch the front APIM lower bezel, if the buttons are flashing then it’s not done yet. I’ve had it take over 20 minutes before.

When shutting it down I just wait until the light around the USB is off. Then turn car on ignition off. It’s also important to wait for it to say you can remove the USB.

I’ve had the USB LEDs turn off but group of buttons by the seek buttons still flash. That the only way I knew it wasn’t done yet. Doesn’t always happen that way for all APIM updates but the bigger ones this seems to be the case.

When you shut the truck off, are you leaving the driver door open?
I had luck with some of these by waiting for the 10-15 mins and then disconnecting the negative battery terminal for a few minutes.

Just to confirm, you're (or the tech is) re-formatting the USB 3.0 thumb drive each time before downloading/copying from FDRS, and the thumb drive is at least 32 GB and formatted as exFat?

Do IT!

I haven't heard of anybody else getting borked by 2.8.2 ever.

That only happened with one OTA last fall.....

Trust me! ?
2.8.2 went right though.

2.8.3 failed…..I supposed it’ll keep trying. But if not, FDRS I guess.

Wondering if my FORScan changes messed things up…

Disconnecting the negative on a Powerboost will not work because of the auxiliary battery.

The truck is fully shut down and the relays reset if you open and close the door and wait until the LED halo around the rear seat USB ports is off. Keep the transponder away from the truck while waiting for shutdown to avoid triggering the proximity sensor.

What about if the hood is ajar/open because of the battery charger?
