I had a 2021 PB - drove it to about 83,000 miles before the transmission started having problems with a high pressure pump sensor. Was replaced several times before Ford agreed to put in a completely new transmission. Dealer was really great, but the process of going back over and over - then having a loaner suburban for over 45 days drove me away from the PB (for now anyway). Traded for a 2023 EB (almost the same truck but no hybrid). Very happy now. Asked what the cost of a PB transmission would be (at the dealer), told about $12,500 ... that was my que to move on ... I have posted several times about my experience, feel free to read those if you want to know more. Good luck ...

2023 Ford F150 PB
Call me naive or pessimistic…but when someone calls PB unreliable and then turns around and buy a F150 non-hybrid, i always scratch my head.

Ford dependability sucks (see JD Powers chart below). Resale value of pretty much any Ford, not named Raptor or Mustang (and maybe Super Duty), will suck donkey balls regardless of powertrain. No one wants to buy a Ford F150 truck with 100,000+ miles, hybrid or not.

Buy what you want with the features that you need and enjoy. For me, i plan on keeping my F150 PB until extended warranty runs out (125k miles) and either dump it or keep going depending if my truck was made on a Friday or Wednesday. :D So far, it seems to have been made on Wednesday.

Note that JD Power Dependability surveys has shown that Ford was below average for past decade or longer! So, it is not like PowerBoost all of a sudden made Ford unreliable! All Fords are unreliable!

I have a 2021 King Ranch PB coming up on 3 years and 51,000 miles. All options, essentially zero issues. High speed highway, towing, gravel roads, snowstorms you name it it just works.

I ordered a 2024 King Ranch PowerBoost last October. Got my Vin#, and build status has been "In Production" since 2/15. So now it is probably parked in a field with thousands of others waiting for Ford to figure out what has to happen to make their trucks salable. I have been reading multiple threads about all the problems PowerBoost owners are experiencing, and I am starting to wonder if I should go through with my purchase when/if my truck is finally available. So my question is, are there any PowerBoost owners who have NOT experienced any problems, and are completely satisfied with their truck? From what I've read, there are many battery issues, truck totally shutting down while driving, jerking when switching from electric to ICE, some small AGM battery under the rear seat dying, multiple problems after over the air updates, windows going back down when using auto up, no connection to Ford Pass app, low battery shutdown warnings, broken axle bolts, and on, and on, and on....... Did Ford move all their talented engineers over to work on EVs and there are none left to keep their #1 profitable vehicle out of the repair shop? Still have not read of a single person who has taken delivery of a 2024 F150 after being in production for almost 2 1/2 months, and when driving around SE Michigan, I see lot, after lot, after lot, of parked F150's. Ford has said they have started deliveries of the '24s, but still don't see any on dealer lots. Farley has said they are benchmarking Toyota for quality, so maybe I should buy a Toyota instead of a Ford? Are 2024's not being delivered because of quality/parts issues, or is Ford holding back deliveries to try and push excess inventory of 2023 models off dealer lots?

*********************

Update:
I want to thank everyone for providing this feedback. Makes me feel better about going through with a purchase. However, the common denominator of most problems people have raised are related to the battery being drained by the many systems that continue to run with the vehicle off, and their recommendation was to drive more, install a battery tender, deactivate some of the features like the perimeter sensors, or as some have suggested, always carry a portable battery pack with you. Seems a little strange to have to go to these extremes on a $75,000+ vehicle. I am retired and very often I may not drive my truck for 4-5 days, and when I do, it may only be for a short distance to the store and back. So this may be a problem for me. If this is such a widespread problem, maybe Ford should consider including a built-in battery tender as standard on their build. As I live alone and have no other means of transportation, the thought of my truck being tied up at a dealer for several days, or even weeks as some have mentioned, is also a concern I have. Again, I want to thank everyone for their feedback.
Hi Gh8toes

I have a 2023 Powerboost and it has been perfect. I have 25K miles with about 5K towing a 7K TT. If you do not plan to tow, then this truck is perfect from my point of view. I have a small hobby farm with horses, goats , etc and the 7.2KW generator has been very useful in operating power equipment when building shelters, sheds, etc. True, this can be done with the plethora of cordless tools available today, but I like being able to use what I have.

Operating the TT in boondocking scenarios is great. The PB has powered my TT A/C, microwave and everything else flawlessly.

My truck is a MY22 Job 1 PB built on Dec 23, 2021. I was also lucky how fast it was built. Order placed 11/1/2021. Built 12/23/21. Delivered to dealer the 1st week in February.

At 24,473 miles I can't complain any. It's done everything I've asked it to do. Over 1/2 of those miles have been towing a 6,000# GVWR travel trailer. I got the 7.2 Kw generator in order to power my trailer when boondocking. Has worked wonderfully for that. Last Memorial Day weekend on a full tank, I ran it long enough to cause the truck to shut down the generator. 85 hours. Normally my boondocking weekends do not last that long. Spent an extra day in order to dodge the rain back home. In the future after 3 days, I'll fill it up again.

The last week in Dec 2023, the check engine light came on. It threw several codes. The CEL was on. The dealer got it in the shop on 01/03/24. One code indicated a problem with the catalytic converter. The other indicated a Starter Generator control module issue. They did a TSB 23-2425. Performed a sulfur removal procedure and updated the PCM, along with other required multi module updates. Dealer did say if the same codes show up again, the the catalytic converter would be replaced. Got the truck back at the end of the day.

No more codes have been thrown so far. Of course the cat converter isn't a PB specific problem.

I've been happy with the rolling generator/computer.

This is the write up by the dealer.

I got mine in November and have put about 2500 miles on it, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, I love the truck so far and have had no issues. That said I did just drop more than I probably needed in esp due to all the negative reviews, I guess better to be safe! I grew up driving my dad’s F350 for work and am elated to finally have my first truck after sedans and a Jeep. Lots of fun to drive, no issue in snow and shit weather.

I have not experienced the gas mileage I thought I would. I changed the intake to the Roush intake early on and need to revisit my installation. I plan on doing 3-4 months in the spring/summer on the oem, then switching back to roush and seeing if I can toggle the issue. Currently getting 17MPG by the pump and OD. Not willing to make a final statement about this until I do my troubleshooting and due diligence.

I also live in a hilly area and go to the mountain often so it could just be par for the course where I am.

I also feel like they should have made the battery and electric motor a little bit larger, I find I am kicking on the ICE more often than I thought I would need to in order to accelerate at a normal pace from a stop(not trying to be that driver, there are enough Prius’ where I live…). But that issue could have been sorted when I did the test drive, I just didn’t know what to pay attention to.

payload might be an issue in the future, I wish they would have beefed things up a bit to compensate for the battery/motor and pano roof. I’m sitting at 1348Lbs(sticker) which may limit me in the future. Again, just didn’t know what I was looking for when I bought.

long story short, love the truck, imo best thing on the market for me right now. Looking forward to the truck hybrid/electric of the future when it is time to upgrade!

At 2500 miles the truck isn't even broke in yet. My gas mileage improved with more miles on the truck.

2021 PB Lariat. Only issue was with the OEM battery. Replaced under warranty, but it took four trips to the dealer for the low battery shutdown issue.

My '21 Lariat FX4 has been trouble-free. I had the issue where the OTA software updates got stuck - never created a problem for me - dealer fixed it.

After I sold my camping trailer, I thought I might want to sell the truck. That thought lasted all of 3 seconds.

Nearing a year with my 23 PB Platinum and I am quite happy with it! I absolutely love it and keep adding things to it without telling the wife! Has had two issues though. Battery issue and transmission auxiliary pump issue which causes the car to jerk forward. I want to change both batteries with Odyssey AGM but I don't think they have the rear one. For now, I connect the one under the hood to a trickle charger every Sunday night. As for the aux pump issue, I took it to the dealership and after two hours they called and said it's fixed. Looked like they just reset the code/s and it has been working fine ever since(two months or so).

I also have a similar setup as @Tigmd99 at my house. I have the fridge, furnace and a few lights and receptacles connected. The 7.2KW was one of the big reasons I purchased the PB. It is the quietest backup home generator you can get. This home backup generator is also capable of taking you to the grocery store! ;)

I do have to mention that it is more complex than your regular ICE so if you want something simple without the extra parts, you may want to look at other engine options.

It is also, without a doubt, the most efficient 7k watt generator you will find. Learn to use it correctly and it sips gas instead of chugging it.

I just reached 1 year of ownership with my 22 PB at 11.5k mileage. I am getting 3 mpg better than my 2017 ecoboost on the same daily drive.
No issues with any of the hybrid systems. It is a hybrid and does have some quirks, but no issues there. The few issues that I do/did have could happen with any power trains.

Very happy with my 23 KR PB with 5100 miles. It's been to the dealer twice but that was me trying to create a paper trail to get the lousy 12V AGM battery replaced. I received two "Stop Safely Now" messages but after a software update those disappeared and my OBDlink+ shows the 12V battery charging at 15V so I also don't get the "Deep Sleep Mode" alerts anymore. My commutes are under 5 miles so my lifetime trip meter says 19mpg but I regularly get 23mpg on longer drives. Overall I love this truck and hope to keep it til 2030, then buy the new generation.

...And don't forget: It's a true 7.2 kW generator. You get 7.2 kW regardless of altitude. Note that a normal portable generator, where the engine is matched to the generator, loses performance with altitude. At my home, 7500 feet elevation, a regular generator is derated by 30%. The Powerboost, with the much larger engine, remains able to produce 7.2 kW. :)
