From Kentucky to Michigan and back in 31 hours

I work for Ford at the Kentucky Truck Plant and just finished up an apprenticeship so I had to take a final “training” class in Dearborn.

I’ve l read plenty of posts on here about how the 5.0 with 3.73 gears gets horrible gas milage. Well mine does on normal days but it can control itself on a trip.

Total trip 712 miles 12 hours drive time!
I averaged 24 mpg on the trip up

Had cruise set to 75 for most of the trip when I wasn’t sitting in traffic

Filled up at the Costco by my house before heading out of town.

I could have made the whole trip on 1 tank but did stop and fill up a few miles before the gas light came on because the MTE and destination were within 5 miles of each other

This truck surprised me

Better than my 2019 Ranger 4x4 SCrew 2.3 EB.....I have to really baby it to hit 22, even on my trips down to the gulf coast (900 miles).

Awesome! I’m doing a ~3500 mile road trip this summer. Hoping I can get something in that range on the trip. If I can, it’ll be nice having more gas in the tank than I can realistically drive for one day!

Yep, 10.1L/100km (~ 24mpg) doing 100kph (~60mph) for hours on country roads. These trucks, even though they are rolling bricks, have been "wind-optimised" for sure. I added a retrax roller cover and some Yakima towers and crossbars; now I can't get it below 12s (~19-ish mpg)?

Depending on which way you throw a brick and how well worn it is; bricks are surprisingly aerodynamic.

The three overdrives on the 10R80 definitely help on the highway but on my only long road trip. I had to keep it under 65MPH 90% of the time to get 20+MPG and it was a lot of work riding the cruise control to keep from downshifting on hills to keep the RPM and throttle opening low.

I tried to get 20+MPG in city driving but it’s really hard and the rest of the traffic doesn’t help but it is possible late at night to drive really smoothly like there’s an egg between your foot and the gas pedal and if you don’t use the brakes as much as possible.

A Powerboost V8 would be a great truck and probably better than the Ecoboost powertrain in terms of integration of the PB technology.

There are a lot of factors that come into play. The 5.0 has cylinder deactivation which helps it a lot. However, it also depends on the route, speeds, and weather. My powerboost on open highway will pull 27-31 depending on speed and weather.

So you said you work for Ford, ha?! Any family and friends group buy discount on parts and accessories, tech manuals, inside scoops? ;)

Excellent mileage for a V8!

What field is your apprenticeship in?

We need more apprenticeship programs in the USA and I am happy to hear Ford and yourself are investing in one. Great path to a career.

You’ve had it for nearly 33,000 miles. Did you drive differently and that explains your surprise? Perhaps the truck is new to you?

I have gotten MPG in that range on several long trips, but I notice that the fuel makes a huge difference. I like Buc-ees and Loves when I am traveling because they seem to both be fairly consistent with quality. I tend to get worse mileage from Marathon gas.

A hybrid V8 would probably get me back into the dealer for another new truck lol. It really would be a f*cking good combination. On the highway even for acceleration it would stay in V-4 mode and just use electric assist. Sport mode would keep it in V-8 mode for when you want that rumble, and obviously under regular acceleration from a stop it would give you all 8 cylinders. Would be a perfect world, and you could run a miter saw and some chargers!

Did you confirm doing the math? If it was a surprise, the guess on the screen might be off?
