From Kentucky to Michigan and back in 31 hours

I work for Ford at the Kentucky Truck Plant and just finished up an apprenticeship so I had to take a final “training” class in Dearborn.

I’ve l read plenty of posts on here about how the 5.0 with 3.73 gears gets horrible gas milage. Well mine does on normal days but it can control itself on a trip.

Total trip 712 miles 12 hours drive time!
I averaged 24 mpg on the trip up

Had cruise set to 75 for most of the trip when I wasn’t sitting in traffic

Filled up at the Costco by my house before heading out of town.

I could have made the whole trip on 1 tank but did stop and fill up a few miles before the gas light came on because the MTE and destination were within 5 miles of each other

This truck surprised me

I had posted previously on a 5500-mile trip this past Christmas. Computations for MPG was total miles driven divided by total fuel used to the nearest tenth. I used 87 Octane in ALL states, including UT, CO and KS, never did/wouldn't use 85. Total fuel cost was $647 (like the IRS, rounded to nearest dollar :)) for the entire trip, while the truck's lie-o-meter said 21.5 mpg, my actual computations came out to 22.5...now I would give that an error rate of maybe ~.3-.5 since I only calculated the fuel to the nearest 10th, not 100th. Still, even at 22.0, pretty satisfied with the overall numbers especially with the winter weather, mountains, headwinds, elevation changes, high speed limits we encountered.

I rented a V8 F150 before I bought my truck and was pleasantly surprised by the mileage it averaged in suburban driving.

Powerboost V8.... that does sound pretty good to me. I wonder if its even possible? Space requirements?

I would have gone Coyote if I didn't need the Pro Power On Board...

On my drive from St Louis to Oklahoma City right after I bought my truck. 5.0L V8 3.31 gears and lots of these was driving through the Ozarks so this was not flat roads by any means. They are good on gas if you know how to drive 'em. Tip: Don't use cruise control. Get some momentum going down the hills and let it coast up the hill a little before gently getting on the gas. I don't like cruise because it likes downshifting and aggressively accelerating to speed during these times.

Best mileage was around 70-73mph. I noticed MPG do down by 1-1.5MPG just by increasing speed to 75-80mph.

Excellent mileage for a V8!

What field is your apprenticeship in?

We need more apprenticeship programs in the USA and I am happy to hear Ford and yourself are investing in one. Great path to a career.
I’m in Industrual Truck Repair. We do maintenance on all the forklifts and tugs that move parts around the assembly plant and we also do maintenance on electric buggies and golf carts that the other trades use.
Did you confirm doing the math? If it was a surprise, the guess on the screen might be off?
I did not do the math.

You’ve had it for nearly 33,000 miles. Did you drive differently and that explains your surprise? Perhaps the truck is new to you?
Yes I bought it with 30,000 miles back in January

The Mustang has some interesting going ons, not sure if not it will ever migrate to the F-150 if realized though as they are differing platforms. Farley said on a call in August “probably” to a V-8 hybrid Mustang when asked. There are also 10R80 MHT 5.0 parts showing up on FordParts for 25-Future with no other labels or indicators. The initial patent shows the 5.0 with a front hybrid drive though, so the V8 would be powering the rear wheels and the elective motor would power the front axle. If it were a to become a 10R80 MHT then instead, it would be setup more like the PowerBoost in a pancake motor. Yes it would fit, you’d just have to make a shorter rear driveshaft and longer front driveshaft is all.

I could stand between my radiator and my motor to be honest, tons of room in the 5.0 engine bay to move the ICE nose-bound if need be as well. The 5.0 is a WIDE motor, but it’s also pretty short front to back which frees up space if they wanted to throw an electric motor on the bell housing.

Yup. I regularly get 24 mpg on thr highway.

The issue is the 12 mpg when im feeling frisky. Lol
This will be my issue when mine comes in. Even when I had the Gen1 Ecoboost back in 2011, I could never get the advertised MPG because I kept my foot in it. And this will sound better than that truck did, making it harder to avoid to the loud pedal.

Kidding aside, this is how I configured my 2024 build, so it's nice to see real world evidence. I'm not buying it for the gas mileage, but it would be nice to maximize it when possible.

I mainly run in the city so I normally get horrendous gas milage but I also didn’t buy it for fuel economy. My truck lives up to its paint color

The 5.0 sounds good anywhere over 2,500 rpm, and you have 6,800 rpm available stock. You rarely ever will go past 4,000 rpm and if you do the rears kick and spin even from a roll. If I floor this thing at a roll from 35 MPH the 5.0L still spins the rears enough to create bed hop and make traction control whine. Peak torque is at 4,250 and it really throws you back hard by 4,000 rpm. If you are up in that 6,000 to 6,800 rpm range you are looking for extra fun and maybe some trouble lol. Hits the limiter fast once you pass 60 if you keep it over 6,000 rpm lol. You’ll blink and be at 105 and locked out.

I don't take my cars to the redline too often and the power band on the Coyote seems really good. I appreciate you sharing your experiences with it so far!

2021 4x4 5.0 w/3.73’s here. 2.5 week, 2000+ mile trip with 90% of that being highway and back roads, rarely exceeding 77 let alone 80. From Florida to KY and back, averaged 19-20 mpg (car calculated). I’m not sure how anyone is getting 24 mpg with the same config unless you are going down hill and with the wind at 75 mpg.

I wouldn't trust the computer unless you have calibrated the AFE bias. The bias inflates the actual mileage higher than it really is.

I was the only person and all I have in the cab was a small duffel bag and two car seats so I was probably as light as could be

Plus I noticed when I’d set cruise over 75 the fuel economy screen was only showing 20-22 based on the dividers on the bar Plus were you in normal or eco mode?

We were pretty loaded, 5 people @ 550lbs, and full short bed of stuff. Mostly Eco mode on the highway to keep BC from accelerating like crazy.

Even traveling on highway locally with limited payload, I see closer to 20mpg than 25mpg at 75mpg.
