Retired and not looking. I am driving the wife crazy.
I just cannot find anything on this. A video on youtube shows a guy disconnecting a plug on the negative battery post of a 22 F150. He says it completely turns off cylinder deactivation.

Now this reads like a great idea if Ford is having problems with it. I do not know how Ford's system operates.

Has anyone deactivated by pulling the plug? The only downside I can see is it pulls up a warning screen that is dismissed by pressing the OK button.

V8 cylinder deactivation

I have it on my 21. Best mpg ever was 25.8 pure interstate work from Carlisle, VA to Boston, Ma over 496 miles. I've also did 24.0 over 456 miles from Greenville SC to Carlisle VA the day before.

I'll still stick with the V8 if I ordered as it has plenty of power for my needs (including towing) and I love the smoothness of the V8.

The battery trick might work to disable auto start stop but that has nothing to do with cylinder deactivation. At this point, the 5.0 has had it since 2021 with little to no noise about failures so I wouldn’t worry about it. GM and Ram are the ones having lifter failures directly connected to their cylinder deactivation technology, comparing them to Fords approach is apples to oranges.

When these were being released in 2020 for the 21 MY, I was incredibly skeptical of the cylinder deactivation. I have yet to see any actual issues with these. We would have seen it by now. My vehicles are all tuned but this truck will be staying stock tuning. The MPG gains are worth it to me for what it is to just leave it alone and not screw with it and risk voiding the warranty. Only thing I will get rid of is the start stop with a eliminator device.

Sport mode, nobody has really pursued defeat devices. The valvetrain is alot more precise in a roller-rocker DOHC setup than a sloppier/floatier OHV setup. The way Ford oils these new heads is also intense and not half assed like anything Ram or GM did…Ford spent a lot of time making sure the new roller rocker parts are supplied a ton of oil. From around 5:00 to the 9:00 mark in the video below they discuss the added main oil feeds and the new cast in place oil rails that lead to the cam carriers in the Gen 4 F-150 heads. This system was thought out extensively to avoid wear from the bottom up. Definitely not a tack on afterthought like the GM AFM crap:

Thank you for the thouoghts. I think I leave it alone. Just like my 2011 GMC Yukon XL recalls. Mine went 208,000 miles with no problems. It is still running for someone else.

Did you measure based on fill-up vs odometer, or based on the dash computer? I also have 21 with 5.0, I do a lot of drives similar to the distances you mentioned and never went above 21.
Don't get me wrong - I am not complaining. I did not buy 5.0 expecting a Toyota Prius MPG, just saying that I never saw 24-25. Granted - I go by the computer.

I have a combination of around town and 80 mph driving. I am averaging 18.2 and it is climbing. I do have a bed cover. I am the second owner with about 4,000 new miles on it. 31,000 total.

So you think I need to quit the gang-banger stuff???

I have to say that we are spoiled with gas mileage today. I traded in my 67 425 Toronado (probably 9 mpg, premium only, gas rationing) to buy a 1974 455 Cutlass Salon off the showroom floor. That thing was rated at 10.4 mpg. The 350 was rated at 10.8. Well, duh........I was rich anyway. $700/month salary. $172/month car payment for 36 months. $169/month rent, all bills paid. Uncle Sam. Church. Wife in school. I worked weekends.

Like clockwork I stopped every 200 miles to fill that Cutlass up. At least it was regular gas and regular mpg. I swear it would make 10.4 whether running or idling. What that 455 didn't have in horsepower it made up for in torque, but ran out of that in a hurry too.

Finally at $800/month and a company car later it became easier because my wife got out of school and was making $550/month. That $550/month had me rolling in cash again. Bought our first house, then I was broke again. Mortgage at 11.9% (mortgate rates finally peaked at 13+%. Sleepy Joe was just a piker when it came to handling inflation.)

Then my 1972 454 Vette weighed in. I began running out of rich again but at least I was gaining in stupidity.

There's more. A whole lot more. Still going today. But I will save you.

To the best of my knowledge, Ford deactivates cylinders 1,4,6, and 7. Two on each bank. The design differs from GMs hydrolic lifters significantly. There is a special device that's part of the cam carrier that utilizes oil pressure to actuate a cam. This is controlled by the PCM through four selonoids. When the PCM commands deactivation the selonoids allows oil pressure to flow, this oil activates a "plunger" for lack of better words that locks/closes and unlocks/opens the rocker for the deactivated cylinders. When locked/closed the rocker acts as a normal rocker, cam lobe presses the rocker which actuates the valve. When unlocked/open the cam lobe still contacts the rocker but instead of actuating the valve the unlocked/open plunger allows the rear of the rocker (the part directly beneath the cam) to move down. When it wants to activate it removes oil pressure from the plunger which then engages the rocker for normal function. Theoretically if something were to go wrong with the selonoid it would default to functioning as a V8 until components of the deactivation system are replaced. It should not result in issues like GM experienced. Ford essentially changes the rocker from pivoting on one point always activating the valve to a variable pivot so it pivots normally when not deactivated but the opposite when deactivaton is active.
