that would be hard to duplicate in a modern engine . . .It should not result in issues like GM experienced.
my understanding is that mechanically, it worked fine, but that the electronics controlling it, well . . .
fortunately, it was easy to disable.
It was a great idea, but they didn't pull it off.
And they had to do it with late 70s technology . . .
[it actually came back at GM with the Cadillac Northstar. Its specs called for it to be able to go 50 miles in the desert if it lost all coolant. It tried to do this by only firing on four cylinders, alternating which cylinder to blow air through the other four each cycle to cool. But those stupid step headbolts with insufficient flange in an aluminum block . . . I actually watched one go through shutdown sequence in the desert summer, trapped on a clogged freeway I couldn't leave. It told you as it shut off each thing (such as AC). I got off the freeway, added coolant and water, and it was happy. [the radiator cap had been a couple of degrees short of tight]).
