I run the Motorcraft FL500S. It seems to be the only filter with the bypass in the top of the filter. As far as I have read, all of the other Mann-Hummel made filters (WiX, Purolator, Napa, Mobil 1, etc) have the bypass at the bottom. The bottom bypass allows the dirt on the outside of the filter media and any that's settled at the bottom of the can to circulate back into the engine. The bypass is necessary to allow oil flow at low temperatures. I change my oil every 3,000 miles so it might not make a huge difference for me but the top bypass should prevent any contaminants that the filter trapped from circulating back through the engine. I've also cut open a few of my used Motorcraft filters and I haven't noticed any loose or stray adhesive inside the filter.
Thanks. That’s some good information.

I wonder why Ford is the only one that seems to have the bypass this way. Or is there a reason or manufacturers haven't.
I’ve wondered the same thing.

I have always used motorcraft filters even on my last gmc which uses the same as my ford 5.0. Never had a problem and they always seem to do good in oil filter shoot outs.

He is a hack according to people on BITOG that work in (or have a bunch of knowledge about) the filter industry. He did not use the ISO standard that most reputable filter companies are judged by.
To starts I wouldn’t trust anyone who puts themselves with an open mouth on a video thumbnail.

So I read a bunch on BITOG and would prefer a quality US made filter but still not clear on this.
Yes, I kind of went down that rabbit hole. Since I have a filter cutter from my aircraft days, I started cutting shit apart.

Every time threads like this pop up, I spend time too much time watching YouTube videos and reading BITOG threads only to end up back to sticking with the Motorcraft FL500S.
Nothing wrong with that filter, except its particulate rating efficiency is extremely low. It’s like 50% with 20 micron particles. With the turbo charged engine, I want to keep the small particles out of the bearings and out of the turbos.

If you like that filter & it works well for you, that’s wonderful. I do like that style of bypass valve. But, the bypass valve does not help or keep the glue debris, from entering the engine.

When I decided to move away from the FL500, due to it filtering in efficiencies, I had three of these filters sitting on the shelf. I cut all three open. All three had an extremely large amount of glue splattered everywhere. Each one had glue particles that came off the filter media when I blew on them.

For me, that’s a failure for an oil filter.

Did we watch the same videos?

People are saying the Boss and WIX are the same, when they're clearly not and the author decides on a preference for Wix at the end, because of one of those differences. ???

And once again we see proof that "made by the same co." does NOT mean they produce identical products, for different brands.

But I thank you for this thread anyway. This old guy was reminded that things change.

When I was working around heavy equipment and farm machinery, it was basically universal, that the mechanics used Wix filters. Also, there was a common display at the time, on pretty much every auto parts counter, of a Wix, Fram and 1 or 2 other oil filters, cut in half, for display. You could see the difference. Wix was simply obviously, more robust in build quality.

So, while the vid showed some differences between the 2, they certainly weren't as stark as back then.

I agree…… those filters aren’t the same

FWIW, I have never had an issue with an Amsoil Filter (except the cost). I also never run an Amsoil filyer to their supposed 20,000 + mile rating though. I do 5000 to 10000 mile OCI's. Using Amsoil Signature 5W30.

I don’t think I’ve ever had an issue with the AMSOIL filter either. However, the picture show it leaks internally. I have no idea how much debris gets by those spring plates, but for a new truck, I’m not gonna risk it.

Microgard Select is the only one I’m running now.

The AMSOIL AEO17 let me down badly……
The Fram Endurance suffers the same flaw. Ripples on the spring plate do not allow it to sit properly, so, it leaks allowing unfiltered oil past.

Which Microgard Select model fits a 23 PowerBoost? I have a hard time looking it up online!
