I'm looking to purchase a transfer switch and can't decide which to buy. The
Generac
Upgradeable Manual Transfer Switch Kit for 8 Circuits
or the
Reliance Controls
10-Circuit 30 Amp Manual Transfer Switch Kit

One thing I like about the Generac is the automatic switch will light up Green (Utility) when the power comes back on. The Reliance ones I do not know how those work but there are a number of electricians here who can speak better to that.

I know the Generac completely isolates the house ground from the trucks so the truck does not switch off, but what the Reliance does to handle this, IDK. Good luck.

I’ve got the Generac as well. So far, so good! It came recommended from my electrician friend, and he installed it for me.

I bought and installed the Generac as that was all that was available at the time. You can’t wrong with any neutral switching transfer switch!

I have ordered the Generac 6854. It comes with the receptacle for the cord from the truck and a 10' cord. I need to get a 25' cord and use them both to go 35'. I hope that's no problem. I am building a house and the electrician will install it. This will be new for him.

How much current do you plan on drawing? 30 amps at 120v is 3.6kw, half of what the 7.2 puts out. (although if means 30A for each phase, it would be covered.)

An electrician will be familiar with the calculations and workable cord lengths.

Why a transfer switch and not an interlock kit?
After looking into both the interlock kit seems to give you more flexibility with a little more planning involved

If this will be new for the electrician just make sure if he uses a junction box that the ground wire (bare) from the truck is not touching any of the other ground wires. It will throw a truck fault. My electrician had to wrap that wire to be sure it did not touch any others when pushing it back in the box.

Get a 50 foot cord like this for the truck PPOB to the switch outlet and keep the 10 footer for other purposes. Good luck.

The truck provides 120/240 volts at 30 amps Giving you the 7.2 kw

The Powerboost has its own neutral/ground bond system. It will sense the houses neutral/bond system and go into ground fault and shut off. The interlock doesn’t isolate the house neutral /bond from the trucks neutral bond. A 3 pole neutral switching transfer switch isolates the house bond from the truck bond while maintaining your houses grounding system

Thank you so much for this information. I had my electrician scheduled to install the interlock next week, I would’ve been quite disappointed!
