OK, learned something new . It's a 2021 MY so I guess that's good ?
So what is 1.7.1 and how do I know if that's what I am stuck on?

I didn't do this when I updated mine and everything works fine. You having any issues?

not that we've noticed. just wanted to see if i could confirm what the process accomplishes to gauge if i HAVE TO do it. compare that against how it's acting. just don't want to pony up for a new license if it's not required nor NOT do this if it has a benefit.

So I am 2021 Job 2 and my SYNC shows Software Version: 21223_PRODUCT Revision: 197.

The build date of your software is actually displayed in your SYNC version number.

In your case the software version is 21223 meaning 2021 released on day 223 or August 11th

The current version is 23291 or 2023 day 291 or October 18th

So, if I use FDRS to manually update my stuck updates, will this version change to 23XXX, or will it stay be 21YYY (because it is a 21' MY?
And again, what is this "1.7.1" version that people are stuck on? Where do I see that?

Yes, with FDRS would be able to update your truck to the current available SYNC version which is 23291 for the 2021 trucks and your SYNC version will be displayed as such on completion of the updates as 23291.
1.7.1 refers to a very old OTA that was sent to these trucks in late 2021 and was known to fail often on 21 J1 trucks.

In regards to the 2nd part (1.7.1) - since I am 21 J2, how do I know if I am also stuck on 1.7.1, or is it 1.7.3, or 1.8.something? 1.7.1 is mentioned for J1, but I am not J1.

Your Job2 truck was shipped from the factory with software that was newer than the JOB 1 trucks received when they were built, so, the 1.7.1 thing would not have ever involved your truck.

hey guys, got a question. what does this process do, and how can you tell if it is needed? besides just saying if you update ddm/pdm do this... is there a symptom to watch for to know you need to do this, or can you do it with forscan/outside fdrs (like pushing buttons in a certain sequence)? we updated a homie's truck, and didn't run these. wondering if we need to grab another license just for this.

Never bothered to do that, I also read it in this thread. No issues with window bounce back. I believe Forscan can run the same calibration but I haven't looked because it ain't broke.

You can guesstimate your place in the OTA madness by looking at the other sticky thread in this area covering OTA updates. Rugedraw maintains nice spreadsheet there. I was more behind than you when I updated with FDRS and it was a full two day project.
