I added bit over half quart proper Ford fluid and ran it a few miles
I’m thinking fluid level may need to equalize with torque converter after adding
Fired it up next morning and if it slipped any it was hard to tell
Let it sit for 2 days and again started and put it in gear and I felt it immediately engage in gear
I’m retired so I don’t drive it every day
I’d have to say it’s fixed
I checked it while back and found it be low
It’s supposed to be at the 5 1/2 mark on stick oil 206-230F
It was at 6 1/2 only 1/8” on tip of stick
Yeah it’s a pita
Must take dust pan off cold and take 19mm wrench and make sure you can easily remove cover mine was very tight
It’s a aluminum cap so make sure wrench is on it good
Then just get it tight enough for a test run to warm up fluid
My STX dosen’t have digital read out I can find
Harbor Freight sells a temp reading gun for $28
Must be level both ways
I pumped it in through the dip stick hole
I’ve not tried to check it again

If you attempt a fluid check be sure have long sleeve cotton shirt on it’s very close to exhaust and you can’t help but to touch it

If you have a OBD2 scan tool, I think most (if not all) of them can read the transmission temperature. I know I have seen it with the OBDLink MX that I use for Forscan.

I have a '21 2.7 with 30k (luckily splurged for the 100k/6year) with the same issue. Fluid levels look good but trans basically slips for the 1st 10-30 seconds after a cold start. My local dealer doesn't have a transmission guy, so good times...

I started this thread 14 months ago. My truck still does this, but nothing has blown up yet. Took it in for maintenance and asked the dealer to check it out and they said they see nothing wrong, but then again, they didn't run any diagnostic tests on it because I would have seen it in vehicle history if they did. I don't stress it anymore. I just use remote start and by the time I get to my truck and settled in, it's ready to go.

I've had three 10 speeds (two different applications) that have all done this - only on cold start and immediately returning to normal after the first initial shifts and coasting (throttle off). I can't remember where I read a more detailed explanation, but I've always chalked this up to some type of programing to warm the fluid with different shifts and operation of the torque converter clutch.

There is a small reference to the "cold start shift schedule" in a 10r80 manual I downloaded but does not provide much detail:

The cold start shift schedule allows delayed shifts when the transmission fluid is cold to help warm the transmission fluid. The PCM or TCM also inhibits TCC operation at low transmission fluid temperatures and adjusts line pressure for temperature.

Good morning, Jeff. Would you please send over a private message with your VIN and dealer info so I can look into this transmission concern on my end?

There have been a few of us here that have had cracked transmission pans. I could see your fluid level dropping low as a result. Adding fluid would have been my first shot at fixing it. Well, actually checking the fluid level would have been my first task, but we all know how fun that it.

I have discovered this issue where if I start the truck and put it into drive or reverse when it’s 20 degrees F or less the truck will not move or move like a drunk on ice. If I let it run for a minute or ten depending on the temperature, the issue resolves. Seems to be a fluid issue. I wouldn't mind changing the fluid at some point as I’ve towed for half the 24,000 miles.

I called Lithia about it and they said it’s normal. Let it warm up. Normally I’d be pissed about it but the ’57 doesn’t like to come off idle for a minute, the BMW can’t move for a minute otherwise it will stall, and the Porsche just sounds too damn good to put into gear when it cold starts. So, I’ll just enjoy watching the sync system try to boot and connect to my phone, maybe, while I wait for the fluid to move around.

Love the attitude.
You just gotta see the truck as being worthy of the distinguished company it's keeping with. ?

Still, there's nothing wrong with fresh fluid for the 10r80, regardless of what the dealership says.

Hey all, new to the forum, and came across this thread in my search. Two weeks in to a CPO 2022 Screw 5.0 and I noticed that when rolling from a stop facing down hill the truck sort of slams or bumps into first gear. It almost feels like it’s sitting in neutral and then slamming into gear while rolling. I also notice a rumble, similar to the lane departure or rumble strips, occasionally between 7 & 8 gear. Finally, it seems like the truck wants to jump forward a lot, or is searching for gears espescially at lower speed/ gear. I’m coming out of a 2014 with only 6 gears so I was hesitant at first to think there was much wrong, but now that I’ve read this thread it seems there could be an issue. I made an appt with the dealer but they’re booked out till 6/2. Anyone have a good video link to check and fill the trans fluid, if that’s the simple solution? I’d love to tackle that this weekend and be proactive.
Thanks all!

Your issue seems to be different. Show the attached TSB to your dealer. That would be a good start.

Thanks! That TSB references the V6’s but not the V8. Same trans, you think that matters?
