As a general rule I would agree that 30K intervals on the transmission filter is overkill. I normally replace the transmission filter at 30K when I do my first service, and every second fluid service or 60K after that.

I will confess that I am a crazy person who should be ignored because I change my synthetic engine oil every 3K, but that's only because I change it every 6 months to avoid excessive fuel dilution. I change the oil in all my vehicles every 6 months or 6,000 miles, but I also drive them in a very spirited manor.
The mach-e is about to hit 20k and there's been zero done to it :p

I'm trying to get the HVBJB to fail but not even it will and I beat on this car hard in a way I've never been able to do with any other car. From an overnight sit to ripping WOT in ~10 seconds after getting in.

The labor time to replace the transmission fluid and filter is 2.6 hours, in my area that's $429 in labor alone. After you add in the filter, pan gasket, 6 quarts of Mercon ULV, shop supplies, and sales tax, the total price winds up being about $650. A fluid exchange only calls for 1.6 hours, so that's $264 in labor and roughly $350 in total.
Mine came to $443 after tax with an oil change done as well but this was just for a flush not a filter replacement. I’ll do filter every 60k and fluid every 30k

It's well overkill to replace the filter every 30k -- that's like doing 3k oil changes on a full synthetic, a complete waste.
Those are good intervals if you tow a lot IMO.

I had mine done at the dealer a month ago @ 35k miles and it was $320+tax. Makes a world of difference, definitely worth keeping on top of especially for how cheap it is, even at the dealership.
Yeah, I did mine at 35k at the dealer too. Drain/fill and a new filter. $279+tax.

With the F-150 the recommendation is to change the fluid at 150,000 miles. The machines that would do a transmission flush are notorious for damaging seals and forcing a transmission rebuild.

I personally haul 1200-1500 lbs of payload everyday since I bought my truck for my business. The owners manual still recommends a fluid exchange every 30k for severe duty cycle (towing/payload everyday, taxi use etc).

You are totally correct though about a truck just used for daily driving and occasional towing only needing it (according to the manual) at 150k miles. As well as the potential for fluid exchange machines to introduce dirt into the system. I keep my engine bay and undercarriage pretty tidy to avoid any potential contamination when it needs servicing, and I’m fortunate to have a good relationship with the mechanic at my local dealership who I trust. I personally accept the risk, although each individual should definitely weigh the pros and cons

Dredging up this old thread to report back. I just performed an extraction and refill at 59,300 miles. To start I put my truck up on ramps the night before so everything would be cool. After removing my skid plates, I used an OEM Tools fluid extractor and removed 7 quarts of old fluid.

The old fluid I got out was not pretty, a dark red/brown.

After the extraction I refilled the transmission with 7 quarts of Motorcraft ULV.

The whole job took about two hours which included the removal and reinstallation of the skid plates. I have noticed no changes in the transmission operation.

I know that the transmission flush machines have badly damaged the seals in automatic transmissions. I also know that for light truck transmissions the fluid is only to be changed when the transmission needs to be repaired.
This is absolute horrible advice. And nobody said anything about flush. You do know there’s a difference between replacing fluid and a flush don’t you?

This is golden……

Most transmission specialists recommend a fluid change at 30-50k.
Severe service schedule calls this out as well.

I assume you are saying you noticed no changes meaning, no harm was done? One thing that I am doing frequently is, to reset my transmission tables which should also be done IMO when changing the fluid..

No harm, but no improvement either. But then again I was not expecting any. I

I did not mention this, but at 29k I had the transmission pan replaced under warranty due to a crack. At that time I paid to have the filter replaced as well.

What I did was not a fluid change, I only got 7 quarts out. There is plenty of old stuff left.
