I have a 2021 F-150 with the ten-speed. I have about 99,000 miles on my truck. Should I change the transmission fluid? My transmission is shifting smoothly, and I want to keep it that way.

I would. Honestly, I am looking at doing it at 30k or 50k. I'm going to send a sample off for testing to see how worn the fluid gets with the driving and trailering that I am doing so I get a better idea when the next time is.

I bought the truck with 85,000 on it. Not sure if transmission fluid was ever changed.

75K is usually a good number to change it at unless the truck is a taxi then do it at 30K. I'm on my third 10R and have changed the previous two at 75K and 150K with no issues. Throw in a bottle of LubeGuard Platinum if it makes you feel better.

Use only Mercon ULV or the GM equivalent Dexron ULV. They're the exact same fluid. Valvoline was making a ULV for awhile but I haven't seen it in stores. Stay away from things like Amsoil that do not have third party certifications. That doesn't mean it's bad fluid, just that you have to take them at their word that it is what they say it is and arbitration screws you if for some reason there's a problem.

If you have the dealer do a fluid exchange, they run 11+ qts through the cooler lines. I did it at 40k.

My neighbor owns a transmission shop and says they see quite a few of these 10 speeds. Recommends changing at 45k miles, but NOT flushing.

From what i hear it is extremely common for a flush to trash any transmission

Drop the pan - change filter, gasket and fluid. Just did mine at 83K and immediate improvement. Shifts weren’t bad before but soooo better after.

Can you elaborate? I'm very curious because most of what I hear/read recommends the flush. Interestingly, my dealer claims that Ford recommends not "opening up" (dropping the pan) the trans until 100K+ miles, and doing a flush(es) for interim service. I'd be interested in knowing where the contrarian information is coming from.

Theres a big difference between a flush and a fluid exchange. Fluid exchange uses a DT-45096 TransFlow and you do not backflush. They open the circuit at the cooler lines. Youre really just getting all new fluid and the trans saw no pressures or directions of flow that were any different than usual.
Not a flush. not a back flush.
