Check your invoice, was the transmission leak from the output shaft seal?

If so, it’s possible that your differential pinion seal leak is a result from a poorly balanced driveshaft.

If the driveshaft is imbalanced enough, it’s basically hammering the bearings and seals thousands of times a minute when you are going down the road.

If that’s the case, just replacing the seals won’t fix the underlying issue and the leaks will eventually return.

Good luck!

I'm seeing this now at 15,000 miles. Did replacing the pinion seal fix the leak permanently?

@RossRR It worked, but I had concerns on how it failed in the first place; like an incorrectly balanced driveshaft. Wouldnt know on longevity of fix as it was a buy back shortly thereafter.

I changed the gear lube in mine early on. The "gasket" is actually an "o-ring" mated to a flat metal piece. if that o-ring gets dinged you'll see a leak.

Just went for an oil change for my '21 Powerboost, and was told the pinion seal was leaking. About to turn 20,000 miles. Dealer said it was premature for the seal to leak, but otherwise didn't say anything about an underlying issue. Every time I bring this thing in for basic maintenance, something else is broken. Last time it was a bolt in the rear axle housing that has sheered off. And, actually, since the ICE portion of my engine ate itself at around 8,000 miles, this is only the second oil change for this truck. I was going to keep this one long term, but maybe that's not a great choice.

I also have a 21 Powerboost, and if I recall correctly, I think I had the same leak / fix at about the same mileage.. that was almost a year ago for me, and no problems since

I have the same pinion seal leak on my 3.5 Tremor (non-powerboost) so not exclusively a PB issue. Have an appointment scheduled to fix it in a couple weeks..

Edit: this leak is difficult/impossible to see from the rear of the vehicle, I only noticed it while I was installing my airbags. I wonder how many are leaking and folks don't even realize it.

You would never have a dealer mention it when it was up in the air for service. GLTA

This is very frustrating. My front diff “failed” Ford ended up sending a new one from the factory floor. Rear axle bolt failure soon after. Then pinion gear failed on rear resulting in a full rebuild. Now two months later I hear the same issue as I did when the rear diff pinion failed so looked under and found diff fluid from pinion seal. I’m struggling to keep faith in Ford.
