More a curiosity than anything. I was 50/50 PowerBoost and RAM with HEMI. If not for ProPower on the Ford I’d likely have chosen the RAM.

Just curious if anyone has driven the new engines and their thoughts particularly compared with the Ford engines.

I always liked the HEMIs but they were undoubtedly getting old and outdated. I6 is compelling vs the Ford V6s.

Power? Smoothness? Any towing experience?

I rented a wagoneer with the lower spec i6. It's a nice motor. Very smooth with a nice linear increase in power. Good top end. It's tuned to keep the RPMs down and rely on it's good torque but that was a bit of a pain on windy mountain roads.

Didn't feel quite as snappy as my 3.5L but maybe it's just that smooth...

I have one. Very strong engine. DO NOT buy one until they get the misfire problems fixed on the standard output engine. I have requested a buyback, mine is at the dealer for the 3rd time for misfire codes and jerking/bucking. It has almost 700 miles on it.

As said above I wouldn't jump on the first model year of the engine. Only thing dodge has ever made that I trust is the Cummins.

Short answer is no. However I ordered a Tungsten trim Ram back in april. After countless delays and increasing news about quality issues and check engine lights, I abandoned that quest and now am happy in a f150 powerboost i bought off a lot dealer lot with benefit of some nice ram conquest cash. Even if the ram power feels good i am skeptical of quality on a new motor from Ram. As youve probably read their engine is a knock off of bmws B58 straight 6 twin turbo engine. I love the B58 and have had a few of them but I like having something thats been out in the wild for a while rather writing a $95,000 check to be a beta tester. I love the powerboost so far!

But Dodge never "made" Cummins

Sorry, couldn't resist. :)

But yeah, I had a pre-EGR Cummins 2500 for grunt work. Picked it up rather cheap used and it was a great work horse after getting the transmission built. (wish it had been a standard)

Those days of simple diesel work horses are sadly long gone. And I hope Stellantis gets this new hurricane drivetrain figured out and it becomes as solid as the Ford Ecoboost. We need competition in the market really bad right now.

i too like competition, it makes the de-content and deletes seems to go away...

My buddy has the 3.0 SO and imo my 5.0 is alot nicer motor. My V8 sounds better, averages 2 MPG better, and when we romped on them the 5.0 walked away from the Hurricane in the upper part of the tach. Down low they were close.

The Hurricanes issue is it can’t rev up high, so on the shifts it falls off the power band hard. The 5.0 revs 1,000 rpm past the 6,000 rpm horsepower peak so she doesn’t fall off 400 at any point when wide open. The hurricane may touch 420 but it can’t sustain it, hence it lost every roll.

My dad just bought a Ram with the S.O.

I went with him to pick it up and drove it home. Power felt okay, I never got into it hard but it didn't seem to have any issues getting out of it's own way to merge etc. It is more than enough truck to do any task he will need it to do. The truck is quiet and comfortable with a very nice interior but I don't see myself going away from the F150 platform/5.0 for one.

It is worth noting that owners have been reporting poor fuel economy, worse numbers than the 5.7.

Ram will definitely be focusing on hybridization to bring MPG up.

I would never buy the first model year of a new engine or generation.

Especially not a Stellantis product.
Didn't the 5.0 Gen 4 get released in 2024?
