I agree with most. It's a new engine and will need to work out the bugs first but I think it'll eventually get there. If they had a hybrid version with a "generator mode" like the Power Boost, I may have looked at ordering one. As it is, I happily ordered a Power Boost mainly for the generator.

Still, if Ram, Chevy, Ford, and Toyota can make a good truck with 500+ horsepower (which all of them can), why not just make a truck with 400 horsepower that gets 30 real world MPG? I'd much rather have MPGs these days than a track day truck.

Difference then is that Ford still had V-8 options to fall back on. I am surprised that Ram didn't overlap the Hemi's lifespan with Hurricane for a couple of MY. They really are sliding their chips to the center of the table on this one.
The 5.0L is 30 years of engineering ahead of the Hemi. It produces the MPG, power, and emissions of a modern powertrain. EPA doesn’t care about # of cylinders, it’s all in emissions/MPG. Fords V-8 checks the boxes. Hemi was getting very long in the tooth without any intervention.

Peak power doesn't really matter w/ current engines. A lean burn strategy for cruising is great for n/a engines. Turbo engines need to keep EGT in check to not burn the turbine which they do with excess fuel killing mileage. Higher compression engines are more efficient but not good for boost. Aero drag is the killer of mileage and there's not really much that can be done on that front. Deleting the mirrors and lowering the suspension would help out but there's still quite a bit of air that needs pushed aside for vehicles this size.

Around town the powerboost is leaving quite a bit of city mileage on the table not being able to take advantage of full regen. Taking the e-motor's power up to 100kW would help as well as tripling usable battery percentage. Being able to fully absorb kinetic energy and using it to get the vehicle fully back up to speed w/out the ICE would bump up city driving to ~36MPG without much fuss. The truck would have far more utility to it in that the ICE would be needed MUCH less than it's currently implemented. If they put the proper clutches into the 10r100 and added the raptor's cooling solution, it's be a much more potent vehicle.

At that point however they'd be better off just upping the batt to the minimum 14kWh capacity and giving it a charge port, instantly able to get the $7500 tax credit at POS. This wouldn't cost them at best $3k to the customer to implement effectively making the PHEV the cheapest engine option. It'd cost another 300lbs at best to do such, and with the proper parts it could still easily come with a 1600lb payload fully optioned. 580hp, 740ftlb of torque, and with a proper eco mode we'd see 35hwy / 50 city for 200 miles / 300 miles with just a single 4 hour charge. Go even larger on the battery and it's even better. It could be babied in an electric only mode for 30ish miles if 130hp / 240tq is sufficient for the needs. Lots of potential here to make practical vehicles and they're content with sitting on their thumb.

i was contemplating on getting a 6th gen Ram 1500.. what’s holding me back is no V8 option. all of my half ton trucks have been V8. it’s going to take a lot for me to step down to a half ton with a 6 cylinder motor under the hood.

If ford makes a powerboost part 2 PHEV w/ the 3.5 and a better transmission to match its output, that'll be hard to beat. Ford's gone stale on hybrid stuff since 21 though and I have very little faith in them being able to understand how to put together a product people want. EVs aren't even feasible until there's a 400+ mile range at 80mph and the ability to get 350kW sustained charging. That's going to take a new battery chemistry that's 8 years out from showing up in any mass appeal vehicle.

C’mon. My 2022 PowerBoost is hard to beat as is! Name the half ton that does?

I was out shopping Saturday and a guy had one of those new 2.7L I-4 TurboMax silverados. He did some mod where you can hear the turbo and was zipping in and out of traffic and looked over at me at the red light after a few revs. I threw my 5.0L in sport mode and he disappeared in my rear view as fast as he came ?. Then he did some weird rev when we met at the next light. I all ready kicked his ass once, I wasn’t going to drag him twice. Accelerated nice and leisurely.

Hope he enjoyed my exhaust note and tailgate…..though he probably couldn’t hear over his obnoxious sounding turbo. Older guy too.

Can't believe they're putting 4 bangers in 1/2 tons. That engine bay must be half empty.

I've actually heard good things about that 2.7 4-banger
I nice balance of low end torque and a good curve

They are quite torquey, 430 lb ft at 3,000 rpm. As with any inline motor with large pistons, it falls flat on its face when you try and rev it out. Not much of a racer.

260hp/277tq for my 2.4T Subaru. 430tq for the 2.7 Chevy is very close to boom territory I fear ?

Can't speak for chevy's experience/reliability but a 2.7l motor putting out 430tq today isn't exceptional. So far the only one keeping boost low with this whole new push into turbos is Toyota and it varies by model. They've got their lexus GX detuned considerably.

Fine. Let me rephrase…

A four banger getting crap mileage for 60K?!!!
My 60K PowerBoost is terrified of this competition.
