Ford's F150 2.7 Ecoboost is the apples/apples comparison.

The Powerboost wouldn't be fair. :)

I'm not a GM guy obviously. But their 2.7 is probably the motor I would pick if I were looking for a mid level trimmed 1/2 ton Chevy.

A four banger getting crap mileage for 60K?!!!
My 60K PowerBoost is terrified of this competition.
Wow that's bad.

As a current GM owner, I wouldn't touch that 2.7 unless it was given to me for free and even then, I'd only drive to the nearest dealership so I could trade it immediately. The only GM engine worth a damn is the 3.0 Duramax.
Having the 2.7 in the Cadillac CT4 V is one thing but I'd hate to hear that engine constantly at high RPMs trying to go through any kind of hill with a load. Not to mention with today's technology, 16/20 MPG is horrid!

I love RPM, my 5.0L eats all the way to 7,000 rpm when manually shifting. The GM 2.7 I-4 doesn’t like to rev, torque is low. Those guys love to sit there and say “muh turbo gives me all the low end”, to me it’s boring. My truck is a DD, not a pure tool. I like top end.

Give it a few more years. I've had countless loud V8s, X pipes / custom exhaust. Between my PB which is quiet and the EV which is silent....

These days it seems the most obnoxious vehicles are shit boxes dreaming of nascar performance. Recently had a well-modified dodge cummins being a douche in traffic, complete with a coal tune and a "wide as your girl" exhaust. We were coming up to a light and both made an effort to catch the yellow and line up. I dropped into sport, 4H / locked diff. I rolled down the window and got his attention, when he dropped his I, I just did a little finger bye bye wave and put it back up. Green hits and while he made a whole bunch of noise, I left him in his own cloud of smoke and noise as he made a laughable attempt to catch me.

I have a ‘22 F150 and a ‘23 Tahoe. The 5.3 is not a bad engine and on the highway it is very efficient. The gm has a better approach on the 10 speed. The key parameter is how good a deal the purchase is. its just too close to call.

Depends whether ram can get the power to the ground toyota also came in with big hp/tq numbers with their i force max but the powerboost destroys it in the 1/4 mile

I think one of the sneaky gems regarding the PowerBoost is the 3.73 gearing while achieving 23mpg combined.

The Tundra can only manage a 3.31 with 20mpg combined.

Contest over

I had a uncle that was high up Ryder ( maintenance division) and asked him what the absolute best motor Ford ever made was..He told me it was the 300 inline 6 and recommended I find a truck with that. This was back in the early 80's. Great gas mileage enough power to work simple and would take abuse and run forever. I have always wondered why the 300 did not make it to this era.

Just guessing, but with all the wonderful attributes that an I-6 inherently provides, it's negatives seem to have limited its widespread use in modern vehicles.
Packaging (length) has to be one of the biggest obstacles?

I know what you mean though about that 300 in our old times. It could run and run and run. My brother had one and it seemed like he drove it forever. The truck literally wore out around that motor.

But he would remind me that it had 250,000 miles on it when the truck was done with and that a lot of modern engines are capable of doing the same.

Cost for maintenance over the lifetime of a 300 motor I would think would be much less than any more modern motor. That was what Uncle Vern stressed the most in his advice to me. Gas tuneups rebuild even just oil changes were much cheaper with the 300.. I have no idea what emissions were compared to other V-8's in the 60's-80's time frame he was referring to but advances in technology to reduce emissions/increase MPG's would apply to all. Commercial/Fleet users look at cost much more than than the average guy and I bet Ford marketing executives decided the 300 Six was past it's prime from a sales standpoint.

I think people get caught up in the romance of the past. Yes my 5.0 has 32 valves, 4 cams, and high compression…..but they commonly last 300,000 miles. The 6.2L V8 in the Super Duty has many 400,000 mile examples. And I mean REAL 400,000 miles. Towing, plowing with that mileage, not these 2.7 EB highway cruisers you see hit that mileage. The old 300 inline 6 will be huffing smoke and the rings will be worn through by the time a modern engine is broken in. People drive more now, and the cold truth is a modern engine is lasting longer than the good ol day motors. You were lucky to 100k in the 70’s before a rebuild per what my parents tell me. My dad also owned an inline-6, he said it was a total pig on gas and slow as sin compared to even the old pushrod 5.0. That motor is way overhyped. They also cranked the blocks.

Not sure about the inline 6 of the 1970s, but I had the Jeep 4.0 straight six in my 2000 Cherokee. That damn thing was the best engine I have ever had. I never once took it to the shop save for tranny flush and changed the brake pads/fluid (I changed my own oil in it). It gave me 175,000 good miles before some a-hole smashed it to bits. I think that was the perfect balance of modern engineering quality and still relatively simple technology.

I looked at all brands possible for new single cab trucks and when I searched for 2023 F-150's I would not consider ANY without the 5.0. because I consider that the best choice for a 'sport' truck. Back in the 80's I just wanted a extended cab truck to carry the family and all the stuff they need.. Grangers out the door price for a 2024 simply can't be beat.
