There is tons of cool stuff you can play around with, and as long as you keep your code private and no one else is running it, it's not that big of a deal. But releasing something into a public fork is a different level of responsibility, and that is what my initial comment was addressing.
Thanks, this was the area that confused me the most. I would likely keep a private repo, which i was starting to think wasn't possible to use :)

I just need to save up some more money before i buy this with my hobby funds. The wife would never understand me spending $1500 on something like this out of our joint account :)

@tonesto7 based on your declared occupation I think it would be pretty easy to create private github repo, add your github key to the comma user on the device and install comma from your github private repo, A few of us did it.

Up until recently, I haven't been compelled to even look into the development at all because my Lariat had BlueCruise and I was happy with that! Now my lease is up and I couldn't find any like vehicles feature-wise to match what I have in my 502A (It was a custom order that has all the equipment in platinum minus the multi-contour seats) for the crazy low payment of $480/mo and I'm too cheap to pay $600/mo for a platinum which has all the features I already had.

But I found a new 502A with enough equipment to appease me, but it doesn't have BC.
So now I need to get a comma :)

I just don't have the funds to spend $1450 on the Comma unit right now :(
I know that once I do I will dive into the development of it like I do and support and polish it as much as I can for our trucks.

@tonesto7 I have an XLT, so I can't really say how bad BC is vs OpenPilot - but man, OpenPilot is so nice, it has it's faults, don't get me wrong. long control still needs fine tuning, lat control is pretty good. Today I drove for 40 minutes, on 3 highways, minimal take over. OP was in control in all the interchanges. I was lucky I had a car in front of me to slow me down - so I didn't have to adjust the ACC speed in the 90 degree turns on the interchanges.

I'm guessing you are looking at a 2023 truck - since 502A doesn't have BC, not a 2024, we don't know if Open Pilot is working on 2024s.

BC is the same software lane centering is so it's literally the same behavior, but requests wheel torque input to gauge you're alive.

The difference is that even when hands free isn't active (as in same system in your XLT), the eye nanny is still a bitch. This is why snake has disabled his bluecruise to turn off eye nanny. Lane centering still works as it should w/ BC disabled, and again, it's the same software underneath so you're already familiar with it.

Agreed, but from what I read, the pain with BC is that it drops pretty frequent, in addition to the nagging nanny - lane centering doesn't

When it 'drops', it's reverting to hands-on mode, not shutting off entirely. It panics in the same spots hands-on does. I have BC in MME and LC in the F150 and use it between 95-98% of the time. Same behavior at the same locations.

Blue Cruise drops way more frequently than OP. I can drive down the same roads at the same speeds and OP handles them perfectly. BC drops consistently in the same places each time. Part of it is the lane recognition of BC with exit striping (or lack thereof) and part of it is that BC has less tolerance for speed around a curve than OP does. There is a definitive difference. I have a 5 mile stretch of highway close to me that will have BC drop 5 times at 70mph. OP will not drop a single time. (This is using Ford's LC)

The only code you absolutely can't play with is the safety code (driver monitoring and torque to actuators).
So you cannot commit changes to the repo for the safety code but are you able to modify the safety code locally, and push it to your personal device?

Can you disable the nanny minder for only your device?

no, they have code in the cloud that checks this and will black list your device. It is a L2 ADAS and you are required to pay attention.

The OP nanny rarely barks at me, it is much better than the Ford one.

I have two problems with the Ford software. “Drop” where it goes from hands feee to hands on, and ”cancel” where all lane assistance stops.

For my 4 hour drive I charted last month OP had zero drops or cancels. Typical Ford software would have had 25 - 30 drops and 4-8 cancels on that same stretch (I’ve made that trip at least 20 times in my truck)

I'm definitely looking forward into diving more into this after I get the lane centering retrofitted on my 22 XL.

Since it's been kind of stagnant in here, I was more than surprised when this device was able to follow another car through a construction detour without me having to intervene. All hands/feet free!

I can't wait until Ajzride and team upload their Long updates and we get the LA model added into SunnyPilot.

It has been quiet. We are waiting for Comma to approve the improvements we suggested for longitudinal control (they finally provided comments last week).

We are also working on fixing the issue where it cannot take tight turns, and where it tries to fight you after you make a turn without disengaging the comma.

when the newest model (LAv2) makes it into SunnyPilot you guys will be really impressed, it handles non-normal conditions really well.
