Oil Leak - Motorcraft oil filter

Hello!

I just got to 10,000 miles on my 2024 F-150 Powerboost, and unfortunately had an oil leak develop over the last two days.

It looks like it came from the oil filter. I did the first oil change myself at 4,500 miles, putting in Quaker State oil and the default FLS-500S filter. Everything went great for over 5,000 miles, until I saw some “colorful spots” on my driveway. Pulled some cardboard and checked under the truck, and sure enough, oil was dripping from the filter. I checked the stick, it hasn’t gone down enough to be noticeable.

I had a spare filter and enough oil for a change at home, so decided to replace it. Replaced earlier today and thus far I don’t see any leaks.

I am a bit paranoid now if I have fully solved the problem. By googling and searching around this doesn’t seem to be a very common issue. The old filter was definitely in tight, and I couldn’t see any visual damage. Also super weird it started leaking after 5,500 miles. Photos of the filter attached.

I am thinking on watching it over the next couple of days, checking the dip stick every drive. If I see it leaking again would probably resort to the dealership.

All you can do is make sure you wipe the mating surface off and make sure the old gasket didn't stay on the truck instead of coming off with the filter, inspect the new filter and gasket prior to install, and make sure the filter is tightened to spec.

Yep. Made sure that the old gasket was not there. Wiped the area before putting the new filter. Also tried to spot if I hadn’t double gasketed it the first time, but could only find one gasket.

I typically tighten as much as I can by hand, then add no more than 1/8 of a turn (usually less) with a filter wrench. Do not overtighten - this can lead to a leak as well.

Jonas, why did you bring a used wet filter into the dining room ? We could have all come outside to see it.

I haven't had any issues with those filters in 34k miles, but I change them every 5k. Put some oil on the gasket, spin it until it makes contact, then add 3/4 of a turn.

Could have been a filter defect. As in the base plate being warped or deformed. Or, debris on the sealing surface.

I was thinking how nice it is to have hardwood floors in the garage. That truck is truly a pavement princess....

I’ve only had one Motorcraft oil filter leak over the years and it was right after an oil change and oil was just spewing out everywhere. Never did figure out why that happened.
