There was an attempt last week in congress to defund the "kill switch" law which will go into effect as of the 2026 model year for all new vehicles sold in the United States. it failed! For those already saddled with the Blue Cruise nany, you already see the pitfalls of this type of technology. I personally do not like the idea of being monitored at all times while driving and feel as though this technology could lead us down a slippery slope of no return.
This needs to be stopped!

Agreed. Say NO to mandatory breathalyzer and kill switches. This is a complete overstep and invasion of privacy. Your vehicle is your property and considered an extension of the home under state law. This is a HUGE invasion of privacy, this bridges the gap between public domain and the home. Next is regulating you inside your home.

As the gullible masses cheer for more and more technology......

This is what they'll get, and worse.
Yes, when people finally wake up and realize what's going on in a couple of years it will be to late to go back .

One of the questions is how long would it take to kill the kill-switch?

Look at all of Kia’s nonsense! Most of the cars a kill-switch would benefit are stolen and aside from stealing the keys too or towing it away; if the car was so easy to steal and drive away in the first place, it’s going to be relatively easy to subvert another system too.

Who knows, maybe criminals will start carrying around intake manifolds with carbs on them and magneto ignitions.

Not the government directly, but some power companies "offer" you a free thermostat BUT it gives the power company basic control of it. Sure, you can turn it up or down, but the idea of someone else controlling the temp in my house, with electricity / gas I pay for, F that !!!

NHTSA has to write the rules for these new systems to standardize it and it doesn't have to happen by 2026. They can delay it as studies are done on the best method to use. The law was written broadly, but it's still up to NHTSA to define the requirements even if it's just a basic breathalyzer.

There is also an inclusion in that package to require rear seat reminders to help prevent children being left in cars. Many manufacturers already have that like our trucks do.

More voting is to be done on these systems and it's not set in stone yet. Get after your Congress person and write to NHTSA to limit the power of these systems.

You're misconstruing two wholly separate things. Technology doesn't equal govt overreach. It makes it easier to infringe on a citizen's rights, but the phone in your pocket more than has that covered.

The law is extremely vague and the implementation of it isn't likely to come for some time as there's no current easy means of achieving what the law wants. Furthermore I'll be more than happy to sell a device to break whatever functionality a customer wants. Dump cellular antennas into a resistor on demand? LOL

But that kill switch shouldn't be a thing, no matter when it's implemented.

Discussing the virtues, or lack thereof, in the RamCharger doesn't parallel with in any way the subject matter of this thread. ?

I don't know anything about this law. But NOTHING about the attempt to overreach surprises me. How should it? Overreach is the norm for control freaks. My oldest daughter is a perfect example, so I experience such tomfoolery daily.

I love her. But I'd never vote for her.

This isn't about stopping auto theft; I believe that's why thieve called it a "Kill Switch" so that people aren't alarmed about it. It's much more sinister than that, this will be a device that will stop YOU from driving YOURE car or truck if it feels for any reason that your impaired. It will monitor your eyes and attention at all times!

Watching my older cousins raise their kids on iPads and not allowing them to go play in the mud, trick or treat, or walk by themselves down the street to friends houses has set my mind. If I do have kids (clock is ticking, I’m all ready 25 so it may not be in the cards), they will not have an iPad, I will force them to go play in the mud…..and I’m not driving them 5 houses up the road. Watching 8 year olds not be able to function without an iPad when me and my cousins were building forts in the woods at that age makes me cringe. No overbearing parenting or iPad kids for me :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:. Go outside dammit!

Eighty percent of our laws exist because twenty percent of our population has to be told how to live with other people.

Our cars are safer than ever, yet fatality rates from car crashes continues to rise. Why? Because too many people cannot put down their %&#@! phones when they are behind the wheel. This is why we can't have nice things.

Don't forget that driving is a privilege, not a right. There is no question of personal liberty here. You may be driving YOUR car, but it's on OUR roads. Until everyone starts driving like the lives of other people matter we will continue to see well-intentioned, but probably badly implemented, laws and regulations like this one.

End of Rant

Bureaucrats should never be left alone to interpret what congress passes. Just another reason Congress should review with an up or down on what these government bureaucrats and agencies produce. AND how many lawsuits will this create if it ever becomes to a law/regulation? More than enough to keep lawyers rich and will it ever make it to SCOTUS!
