If I'm not mistaken the ranger hybrid does have a mode to recharge the battery while driving on ice. As for the payload hit, I think we all know ford is more than capable of upping their numbers, but they need to protect their holy grail of overpriced HD trucks
I’m going to look into that Ranger! I owned a 1989 Ranger XLT back in the day ?

I think the mass hit is real, but I can’t find a good direct comparison of a full hybrid version of a vehicle vs a PHEV version. Full hybrid non plug-ins are not that common. Mild hybrids and PHEV are easier to compare but not what I’m talking about.
There is more mass but not to a point that it degrades what regen provides. Mass this low only shows up in a change of velocity and because braking energy is used to get it back up to speed, it more than washes. Outside of speed or elevation changes, aero is the enemy which mass doesn't change. This is why something like a 250 PHEV makes a lot of sense. Once the mass penalty on acceleration is nixed and regen for braking comes into play, mixed driving will see huge improvements in mileage. I'm not talking ford's mild PHEV approach w/ a ~70kW motor. Give it some real balls in the 130kW+ power levels to max out the 10r140 trans torque figures.

People significantly over guesstimate the weight of the batteries. It's 9-14lbs per kWh of mass for the battery dependent on exact chemistry. Depending on the level of case armor, a 20kWh battery is 300-350lbs. The PB's batt cells aren't even 20lbs worth of actual battery.

I’m sure you’re right and the Super Duty might be the ideal vehicle category for PHEV. I can’t/won’t do the math, so I look for examples lol

I can “vibe” design with Grok but that’s going to be fraught with variables I didn’t think of etc

Read up on this system -- this was 22 years ago with ford / eaton putting an 80% efficient system in an F350.

"The system is designed to improve fuel economy in large trucks during city driving by an estimated 25 to 35%. The HLA system featured on the Ford's new F350 Tonka concept truck"

https://www.designnews.com/motion-c...ive-braking-improves-large-truck-fuel-economy

Now imagine a system where the ICE only comes on in heavy acceleration and is off most of the time.

Oh no! ?
I placed an order for a 2025 powerboost a couple weeks ago, and now I am stumbling over this thread here ...
Did I order the least reliable truck on the market?

So they say. ??

Don't feel bad though.
I have purchased 3 of them.
2 2021's and a special order 2022.

Still have the 2021 XL and the 2022 KingRanch.
Fixing to tow an RV from the Texas Gulf coast to Florida and back, and then a few weeks later, tow to Oshkosh Wi and back.

Of the 3 Powerboosts, collectively 8 years of ownership, only one of them has seen a dealership service department. It was the Max Tow KingRanch and it had sheared an axle bolt. Ford replaced both sides and there was zero drama involved.

I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

No, but you did get one of the best. I'm not at all biased ;)

Ford does not offer the F150 HD payload package at all anymore, right?

Google AI tells me that in 2025, the HD payload package is now called "max payload package", but I can't find it as an option when building one on Ford's website, no matter which trim level or engine I pick.
Does it still exist or not?

Last I saw it existing, it was only on XLs.
No idea if it is still available.

Yeah, I tried. Not finding it for the XL either. My current 2012 has it. Crew cab long 6.5 bed, with 2,200lbs of payload. Never needed airbags dor towing our travel trailer.

2025 has a max tow axle available as part of the tow/haul package. That's it.

The only issues I've had over 63000 miles are not related to the Powerboost drivetrain; one max tow axle bolt break and one leaking rear differential seal. Overall I'm pleased with the Powerboost performance, it gets up and goes when I need it to and I've used the generator to power my travel trailer and and to power tools several times when there was no other electricity available.
