I'm the recent owner (September) of a '21 Job 1 F150 3.5L 4WD 301A w/ HDPP. My previous truck was a '16 500A RWD w/ MaxTow. The latter averaged ~18 MPG over a long-term w/ mixed use, excluding extensive towing. It had tow mirrors and T/A KO2s which may have added a bit of drag.

The newer truck has regular mirrors and OEM General Grabber APTs. I tend to not drive it around town unless the trip includes some highway time. (I live next to an Interstate.) My driving habits are conservative with slower acceleration and deceleration, and I typically drive around 60 MPH on highways to improve mileage.

I get only 12 MPG in mixed use. I expected some decrease relative to the older truck, due to the new one being a bit heavier and having 4WD, but not 30+%. Can I not expect better?

I don't think Ford uses General as an OEM supplier. Hancook tires were very common. Michelin on some of the very expensive editions. Anytime you switch out of OEM, MPG suffers unless you are very smart or lucky. Winter gas doesn't help either.

I have a ‘22 501a 3.5L 4WD with 3.55 gears Ford Performance leveling kit with stock wrangler tires (for now). My long term mix use mpg is 18.5 hand calculated. Even with some spirited city driving in sport mode mixed in I’ve never been that low. Straight city is ~16 and long highway trips have netted me 20+ if I keep it at or below 70.

Something has got to be off at 12 mpg. I don’t know if you get winter gas in FL but still shouldn’t be that bad. Also, heavy non oem tires shouldn’t be that big of a hit.

Not directed toward OP but I don’t understand how the older models averaged +30 mpg and their brand new F-150 barely gets above 10?
It’s strange imo

Perhaps they don't now and perhaps HDPP trucks are different but I know of other HDPP owners who bought their trucks new with Generals mounted as OEM.

Mine has a 3.73 rear end which may penalize me a little. It's stock in every respect.

I was expecting at least 16 MPG. I seems like something's off but it drives beautifully. I have no idea what I can do about it.

If the previous owner added a performance tune that costs me in fuel efficiency, how could I tell?

It's strange to me, too, which is why I'm here.

I was sometimes able to coax my '16 over 20 MPG driving conservatively (60 MPH) on highway trips and was able to keep it over 18 MPG overall. 12 MPG is unexpected and pretty bad. I hope I don't experience worse disappointment when towing my trailer long distances. I assume I'll average 9-10, and 4-5 in the Smokies.

HDPP comes with LT tires.

It would be highly unlikely a tune would reduce fuel economy unless they changed the gas pedal map to something crazy aggressive and twitchy which you would be able to quickly notice, or they unlocked the TC

Mine is as heavy as it could be: Crew Cab, 4x4, PowerBoost hybrid, max tow, sunroof, power everything (Platinum), bed liner and folding cover.

Highway, depending upon speed:
80mph: 20mpg
70mph: 22mpg
60mph: 24mpg

Around town, if I'm careful, I'll get 28mpg.

Now towing or spirited driving: abysmal. Like they say about EcoBoost: you can have Eco, OR, you can have Boost. Get into the boost and Eco is history. When planning my towing routes / stops, I estimate 8mpg with my ~6K LB travel trailer at 65mph.

I'm still on the stock Hankook 275/60/20 AT2s.

Thinking of going with something slightly taller and/or wider that will still fit on a bone-stock truck. All the AT tires I'm seeing, weigh from mid 50s thru high 60s.

What is THAT gonna do to my mileage?

Does anyone have suggestions as to how to improve the mileage I'm getting? The poor performance definitely is not a result of my driving habits.

Is this hand calculated or via the trip computer? Since it’s a used truck I’d check my values in Forscan in case the previous owner changed them for different tires/wheels.

you have heavy LT tires - look up how much they weigh.

The Hankook AT-11 RF2 tires are light - 41 pounds each. With a 3.55 I averaged 67.3 MPH over 9 hours @ 21mpg. 80ish with 700 pounds in it - august full A/C whole time. This was all highway.

Trip computer. I will check with Forscan. I'll also start a new manual calculation but it will take awhile to get reliable numbers since I won't be driving it much until a trip in a few months, then that will be towing, so not representative of overal mileage.
