Recently got a new 23 power boost with the 7.2 option. I’m coming from a diesel where I used addictive and changed filters regularly.
Question is, do I need premium on this? I’m guessing there aren’t any additives needed at the moment as well?
Thanks for the help!

Just fill and go. I do run premium on mine. Seems to run better. Towing for sure run premium. It’s all up to you. Runs fine on regular. Try both and make your choice

I use premium In mine. Do I need to? No it’s a waste of money. Ford says regular is all you need. And who would know more about this engine me or the manufacturer?

No, you don’t need to. I see better fuel mileage with premium. I feel the engine run smoother with premium. Can I back that up with scientific fact, no. Premium is more expensive.

The manual does state for best performance in hot weather or towing use premium. Anything above 87 is considered acceptable.

I honestly do not even run 87 in my lawnmower, I usually run 91 or higher in my truck. It’s your call.

The most important thing is to run Top Tier fuel. No, neither Walmart nor Sam's Club are top tier compliant. Costco, however, is Top Tier compliant.

The engine will run fine with any octane 87 or higher. The higher the octane the more torque/power the engine will produce. You may observe higher MPG as well. Higher octanes are recommended in hot weather or when towing. The computer will automatically learn how to best optimize engine operation. The general rule is that the bulk of the learning occurs within the first few miles with a good mix of city and highway driving and a few full throttle takeoffs. A full learning cycle might take a full tank though. Adjustments are made quickly when going from high to low octane. Adjustments are made slowly when going from low to high octane.

No one will really know if they are top tier. They can say it but who knows where they buy it from. I see several trucks delivering to gas stations. Not like the old days when you would see a chevron truck dropping off at the station. Seems to be all independent distributors

32,000 miles into my '21 Powerboost and the only times I've used Premium is when I am towing. Truck runs great on 87, and I only buy from Top Tier stations (Marathon, Costco).

The most important thing is to run Top Tier fuel.
For those not familiar with it, Top Tier is *not* a gasoline seller marketing tool.

Rather, shin the high compression engines were going to come back in the 90s, Cadillac and th Japanese and German manufactures met to come up with it. It's primarily a detergent standard: they wanted to know what they could count on on being in the fuel, so that they Ould boost compression safely.

It is a trademark that will presumably be defended. And it *will* appear on the pump.

It's not necessarily more expensive, either: ARCO meets it.

In the past, premium didn't necessarily only mean more octane, but could also be more cleaners. These days, most (if not all) brands put their full regimen of cleaners into their basic gas.

Top Tier, higher grade fuel makes a difference in mileage (about 2 MPG greater) and smoothness during idle. 87 idle was very rough and noisy. The truck had a shake and RPMs varied slightly.

91 or 93 in the tank makes the idle smooth and quiet with no RPM variance.

For a 3.5 EB, Ford recommends 91 and 93 for towing which is how we proceed. The Top Tier additives are good for the engine and turbos. Why would I not use it. The truck is a long term investment.

In NY, a 91 fill up of 36 gallons is about $18 more than 87. As we work from home, the advantage is four to five weeks between top offs. We can see a daily driver/commuter might feel the financial bite of more frequent fill ups over the course of a year. For us, $216/year more is acceptable in considering the benefits.

I prefer pure gas for my vehicles but can not afford at today's prices.

Thanks for the help!

The engine management system for the EB is very advanced and will drastically alter the ignition and cam timings based on what the sensors tell it on how the engine is responding to the current octane levels. Dyno tests on the multiple different EB engines have proven that they will easily gain as much as 15-20 WHP by simply running premium (93 octane) in them. This is from the 2.3 to the 3.5 EB.

For daily round town driving 87 pump is fine and you can easily meet/exceed the EPA mpg numbers if you drive conservatively. I run 87 and regularly see 26-28 mpg on city streets and 25-27 freeway at 75+ mph. No real need to run additives as long as you go to quality stations. Most of them run more than plenty detergents in their blends that additives are not really needed these days.
