Drove a 21 PB XLT 302a 5.5' bed (4x4) left stock for a year. That winter it basically returned the same fuel mileage as the former 3.5EB max tow vehicles that had usable payload rating. Summer mileage was OK about 23.3 MPH. Saw what needed to be seen jumped on a 22 XLT 302a 2.7EB payload package truck 5.5' box when trading was good.

Now going into year 3 with the 2.7EB with the payload package truck. No ill feelings on trading away the PB. Have had the 22 in for oil changes, Ford fixes and a new battery.

Problem is not the PB.

The hard down to the core question is are the area Ford techs up to fixing a PB in a timely fashion when problems arise ??????

Stop, punch it when the light turns green, drive a 1/2 mile and do it all over again. Lots of stops and starts and I don't "grandma" the gas petal at take off.
My 21 4x4 PB driving can be categorized as focused, with purpose. Avg MPG since new is right around 17mpg...

That is what I am getting since new as well! Single trips it is anywhere between 17.5-24 but I think it is the average that is important. Mind you, I am levelled with bigger size tires(285/65R20), tonneau cover, bed mat, 50lbs of fixed load, my weight and full Talon Garage plate.

That would have helped some. All the extra 4x4 equipment must have some penalty. Of course Larger than OEM tires and lifted trucks probably exact a penalty also.
If the IWEs are working properly the front axle & running gear are not turning... So the 4WD should not penalize the mpg.
It does depend. Some years ago I discovered that my 4WD Suburban When in 2WD was still turning the running gear. All that happened was the mechanism opened connection between the two front wheels. Everything was still turning. I had wondered since I could see no difference in mpg between 4WD & 2WD... But with IWEs the running gear should not be driven.

Just for comparison. Obviously pushing the speed to 70- 78 lowers mpg to 21 ish.

I was getting 28.1 mpg driving mostly north west until mid morning when the wind picked up to 15+ mph and me driving straight into it. Ended up 270 miles at 12:30 and 25.1 mpg for the trip, mostly around 57-63 mph. 2016 2.7L XLT 373 axle. 142,000 on the Speedo.

I was thinking the penalty would be the added weight.

Fair enough... But keep in mind all of the added weight for the various levels of trim... I'd think the penalty just in weight would be small... Sort of like the difference between driver alone versus driver plus 1 pax...

IF I remember right, Ford eliminated the IWE in '22 for Powerboost...

They were removed in 22 for most TOD transfer case trucks. Now the axle is always live. XL/XLT and trucks w/ Hi-Loc like raptor / tremor have EIWEs

On a 100 mile round trip to go skiing today I got 24.2mpg. Gear, driver and one kid. That's mostly going between 55 and 65 with a couple hard romps. Can't complain.

21.7 lifetime mileage. 4x4, tonneau cover, mostly 75mph interstate or on country roads. Around 10% suburban/urban.

Around 15% are electric miles. Winter is a couple of mpg lower than overall average, summer similar higher. 93 octane increases range about 8%, mpg somewhat less than that. Does not pay for itself over 87, but it's nice to get another trip to town between fill ups.

PB replaced a '12 EB that got 16-17mpg overall on same routes.

So I normally get 24+
But, I also live in North Central Indiana. Rural area so most of my driving is in 55 to 60 zones

I do have to add that over the last just over 7K miles I average 22.4
