I agree for straight ICE trucks. But the latest version of the PowerBoost is very different. Depending on the amount of city traffic driving you do it can save up to 20% of the gasoline consumed. More importantly since the major systems of the truck (like air conditioning) continue to operate with the engine off powered via the high voltage battery and the engine is started by the traction motor, I have gotten used to the engine shutting down. With the PowerBoost the engine is always shutting down a lower speeds, not just when you come to a stop like an ICE truck. So auto start/stop is not going away for HEV's as it is integral to the operation of the high voltage battery system of the truck.

I think this ruling is for ICE only vehicles. Hybrids are a whole different story.

Good riddance to this idiocy. There is no redeeming value whatsoever to this "feature" at all, imo.

First time I experienced this was in a manual transmission Renault I was driving between Paris and the Normandy coast in 2014 Pulled into a toll booth, car died, I panicked. First time driving in a foreign country, using a foreign toll with foreign currency and this shit threw me into a panic instantly. Did the rental break in the Middle of Nowhere, France and leave me stranded? Found a button with the same symbol as the light on the dash, pushed it, and continued on with a pit in my stomach. So yeah, it left a mark. I have disabled this on my Jaguars and push the button to turn it off on my truck and my wife's car EVERY SINGLE TIME. Useless.

I don't always remember to push that auto start stop disable button and then the engine turns off at a stop and I often think to myself “dammit, now my battery SOC is lower again”. Since I don‘t drive the truck every day I sometimes put a battery tender on it to make sure the battery doesn’t drain down too low.

My neighbor who is retired and doesn’t drive far or often was in her driveway one day starting and stopping the engine repeatedly. I was working from home that day and heard this commotion so I went outside to see if there was something wrong and asked her if she needed help. She told me her Subaru was acting weird and it had left her stranded at a store and she was trying to see if she could replicate the problem in her driveway. She was of course unknowingly running her battery down even more so when I checked the battery SOC it was at 11% ?. I had to get my big boy charger out and charge her battery back up at 10-amps, and since the battery was over 4-years old I told her to go get it tested and replaced if needed which she did and was the case.

Every time my neighbor pulls into her driveway I can hear that engine shut down, then turn back on, and sometimes shut down again as she pulls into the driveway. My wife's Kia will do the same thing if you leave that stupid feature on. It’s one of the most annoying features mandated by the government. I hate it! I’m glad to see this go. In my mind the wear and tear and on the electrical systems like reduced battery life and starter life exceeds the emissions saved by turning off the engine every time it comes to a stop because replacing those items is not environmentally friendly either. A good majority of engine wear also occurs at engine startup as the engine is spinning but the oil pressure isn’t at full pressure yet.

The thing is (and I didn't know this)...it wasn't mandated. Manufacturers received subsidies or discounts for implementing them in the name of the "environment". We never NEEDED this crap to begin with. I didn't know that until last week.

@JCsTruck did your neighbor not know her car had this system?

You are correct about it not actually being mandated.

I think she knows the auto start/stop is a feature but I don't think she understands why, and honestly most people probably don't either. I told her because she makes mostly short trips and doesn’t drive the vehicle every day that she may want to disable that feature to help preserve the battery SOC. She did tell me that she noticed that the car was not shutting down at stop lights anymore which was an indication that the computer was trying to preserve the battery SOC. She didn't know there was a button that turns it off but that you have to push that button every time you start the vehicle. I guess I will need to keep an eye on it for her but the old battery did make it almost 4-years.

My kids and I often help her out. It‘s the right thing to do and she’s a good person and neighbor too. she‘s also a survivor of polio so she has a little trouble getting around but remains determined and gets around quite well actually. I bet a hybrid vehicle would be a good next vehicle for her to get.

My old work F150 was a standard ICE and the auto-shutdown was very annoying. It isn't even really a thing with my PowerBoost. As @turbopilot said, the PB is always smoothly switching between gas and electric - the only way i can tell is by watching the RPMs and oil pressure drop to zero

My main complaint about the auto start stop, is the lack of intelligence to it. Stopped at a red light or stopped w/ vehicles directly in front of it, sure shut off. But when I stop on side street to busy road or trying to pull out onto a busy road don't shut off.... there is a camera! It could do it....

Having that not work was the only nice feature of a weak battery. New truck came with it deleted.

That button was the first thing Chip Giles, R.I.P., showed me when going over the truck last June. It's automatic for me to push it before putting it into gear. There's a way to delete it completely, but pushing it is just part of my routine.

I don’t care for it much but the F150 is a lot less noticeable than it was on my Ranger.

The very first mods I did to both the 2020 Ranger I had as well as my wife's Kia was install a 4Dtech start/stop eliminator. Just plain stupid to have the engine constantly shutting off like this. Especially when it's 98 degrees in the shade or below freezing out. I don't mind it in the PB because it's how hybrids are designed to operate and that the A/C continues to work but with an ICE car... Just plain stupid.
