I know you did this already, but check the #91 fuse again, preferably with a multimeter set for continuity. I’ve seen this fault with a bad #91 fuse.
Thanks for the suggestion. This fuse checked out (closed circuit) with a multimeter.

I am pretty sure this is a software related issue given the error popped up during the FDRS software update process.

You’re probably right. Unfortunately, you’ve pretty much done everything on the software side. I found something that might help, but I’m not overly optimistic. In addition to what the SSM says about disconnecting the TRM and the 12V starting battery, remember you will also need to disconnect the 12V aux battery under the rear passenger side seat because you have a Powerboost.

SSM 53236 2021-2023 F-150 Non-Lightning, 2022-2024 F-150 Lightning/Expedition/Navigator, 2024 Ranger – "Trailer Brake Module Fault" Message Displayed In IPC And DTCs U0137 And/Or U0252 In The BCM, IPC And/Or PSCM
Some 2021-2023 F-150 non-Lightning, 2022-2024 F-150 Lightning/Expedition/Navigator, and 2024 Ranger vehicles may exhibit a "trailer brake module fault" message in the instrument panel cluster (IPC) with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) U0137 and/or U0252 stored in the body control module (BCM), IPC and/or power steering control module (PSCM). This may be due to the trailer module (TRM) not communicating in the controller area network (CAN). Replacement of the module will not correct the condition. To correct this condition, disconnect the 12-volt vehicle battery and the TRM connectors and let the vehicle sit for at least 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, reconnect the 12-volt vehicle battery and TRM connectors and reprogram the TRM to the latest software level using the Ford Diagnosis and Repair System (FDRS) scan tool. For claiming, use causal part number 19H332 and applicable labor times found in Section 10 of the Service Labor Time Standards (SLTS) Manual. If symptoms continue, refer to Workshop Manual, Section 418-00A Electrical Distribution > Controller Area Network (CAN) Module Communications Network > Diagnostic and Testing.

I agree. Maybe the TRM config. I am out of ideas at this point. Hopefully someone else can chime in.

I saw JEB's post right before I posted this. Good idea.

Leave the batteries disconnected for at least 20 minutes.

I disconnected both batteries for ~6 minutes earlier today, but I'll try the full 20 minutes later this week and report back. Thanks for the help all.

So got up to APIM version 22293, and when trying to run the IPC update, the cluster powers off, and then the update just fails and refuses. I have to unplug the mongoose before the system resets and the dash lights back up. Is this a known issue? Any resolution?

@joeco Did you see USB error message on the screen at any time? If so, what number did it show? 0? 6?

@jtrimm Did you try the 20 minute battery disconnect?
So I bucked up and bought another FDRS 2-day subscription to attempt PMI on the APIM. After another long download, it asked for a USB drive. I downloaded the files, plugged into the truck and never received an update in progress. I assumed I was in the waiting game part of this, but as I backed the truck into the driveway I saw "USB error" flash across the screen. I tried clicking on it but wasn't fast enough. I did not see a number with it. How can I determine which USB error I have?

I also wanted to add, prior to PMI, I noted the APIM had the two following fault codes: U3000:04:08 which is "Control Module: System Internal Failure: Not a Current DTC Fault previously detected, not currently present." and U3000:41:0B which is "Control Module: General Checksum Failure: Current DTC Fault is currently present."

After clearing and retesting, on the latter came back. I performed the PMI after clearing, and selected that it was not original equipment.

EDIT: I want to add that I also removed voice files when prompted.

IPC is supposed to be done with a USB. Is it not getting that far before this happens? Which version of FDRS are you using?

Those codes are not good. Message me the VIN to see if I see anything helpful, but a general checksum failure may prevent the update from installing.

On the most current version.

Yeah, it fails right at the USB portion. I put in the formatted USB stick anf select it in the pop-up, just like all the other updates that requested it, and then it immediately fails, with the screen going black and start button un-responsive. No files are ever actually transferred to the the USB.

The latest version 46.5.6 (out for about a week but with Thanksgiving week only for about 3 work days) seems to have issues with completing downloads and installs. Seems like 46.5.X versions have all had major flaws. Here is link where you could “downgrade” to 45.6.8, (about 3 versions old) which a few have had work for them earlier this week when newer versions wouldn’t.

The only thing I can think of is try disconnecting the 12v battery (batteris if your truck is a PowerBoost for 20 minutes). You can also try this older version of FDRS since some have reported programming issues with the latest version:

I successfully updated my 2021 using FDRS. I loaded the update onto a USB drive for the APIM and left it plugged into my truck. After about two weeks, I finally received a message saying the update was in progress.

Now I can see both a Sync software version and a revision number (previously they were blank). However, the update only took me to version 21146, revision 145.

Automatic updates are now turned on — should I just wait a few weeks to see if it updates again? When I reinsert the USB, it says the update has already been completed.

Awesome. You're officially out of the broken sync software. OTAs will eventually come in, but it will be forever and a half before you're caught up. I would recommend FDRS again to get as far as it lets you go.

With @rugedraw ’s guidance, I just downloaded the APIM update to a freshly formatted USB drive. Since I want to make the most of my two day FDRS license, and because I expect I will be waiting a while for the truck to recognize the USB and start the update, I am wondering if it is possible to work on other modules in the meantime.

Right now FDRS is waiting for me to confirm whether the APIM update was successful. It seems I cannot get back to the toolbox without selecting Yes or No:
  • If I select Yes, FDRS tries to validate the APIM update, and then will begin PMI when it realizes the APIM update has not completed.
  • If I select No, it aborts the APIM update process entirely.
Neither option seems ideal. Am I missing a way to return to the toolbox or continue working on other modules while the truck processes the USB update? Do I just select No and trust that it won't affect the APIM update since those files are written to the USB drive?

Thanks in advance for any guidance. Hoping this APIM update finally goes through!

Just select no, or force close FDRS and reopen. You can do the other modules while you wait for the APIM update to kick off.
